Liverpool’s Van Dijk no longer the world’s most expensive defender; Man Utd agree £85m deal for Foxes star

After weeks of negotiations, Manchester United have taken a significant step towards signing Harry Maguire after officially agreeing a transfer fee with Leicester for the England defender. The Red Devils will stump up a whopping £85m for the 26-year old Maguire, which will make the Foxes star the world’s most expensive defender, eclipsing the £75m LFC paid for Virgil van Dijk last year.

United fans were desperate for a world class defensive reinforcements after average performances from the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones over the last few years. Solskjaer’s men signed Aaron-Wan Bissaka from Crystal Palace earlier in the summer and reportedly also have Bruno Fernandes and Paulo Dybala on their radar.

Female referee appointed for Liverpool’s Super Cup clash against Chelsea

UEFA have appointed a female referee for Liverpool’s upcoming Super Cup clash against Chelsea later this month. French official Stephanie Frappart has been officially announced as the woman with the whistle for this fixture, making her the first female referee for a major European soccer match. Swiss referee Nicole Petignat was in charge of some UEFA Cup qualifying games more than a decade ago, but no female referee has so far been given the reigns of such an important game and featuring two high profile teams at that.

The game will take place in Istanbul, with local Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir appointed with the fourth official and Clement Turpin in charge of VAR.

Frappart will be assisted by two other female referees- Manuela Nicolosi, also from France and Ireland’s Michelle O’Neal. The trio also did duty at the recent Women’s World Cup final. Continue reading

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann spotted watching the Cricket World Cup

Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann was spotted at the Oval earlier today, watching the Australia v India Cricket World Cup game. England are currently hosting the 50 over World Cup, and are one of the favourites to lift the crown.

Germans aren’t known for their love of cricket, but Hamann developed a liking for it during his tenure at Anfield, with test cricket particularly getting him into the game. The 2005 Ashes, which caught the nation’s imagination like nothing else, made Didi a life-long cricket fan.

Gazzetta Player Ratings Liverpool vs Barcelona Champions League Second Leg

It’s always interesting to see what the foreign media think of our players. We showed you what French paper L’Equipe thought of the Reds’ performance against Barcelona, and here are some ratings from another well known continental newspaper- Italy’s Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Like L’Equipe, Gazzetta has Lionel Messi as Barca’s best player (6/10), but somewhat surprisingly, gives Coutinho a 5/10. The 5/10 is on par with what Arturo Vidal got, and many would agree that the Chilean had greater influence on the game than Phil.
