Gerrard: England call-up will only further aid Shelvey’s development

Steven Gerrard has hailed Liverpool team-mate Jonjo Shelvey’s recent improvements, stating the experience of being in the England squad will only aid his development.

The 20-year-old was drafted into the senior fold on Monday ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifier against San Marino as precautionary cover for Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, who has picked up a knee injury.

The former Charlton midfielder has made an impressive start to the season, scoring three goals in nine appearances, and has cemented himself among Brendan Rodgers’ squad, and his club captain is delighted Shelvey has received international recognition.

Gerrard told the club’s official website “I’m really pleased for Jonjo.”

“He has been improving all the time since he arrived at Liverpool and has grown into a good footballer with good vision who can create and score goals.

“He also listens which means he will only get better with more games and experience.

“Jonjo is playing with confidence at the moment and is in good form.

“This experience of being in the full England squad will be great for him and hopefully Liverpool will benefit from it as well.”
