Sponsor ‘reviewing relationship’ with Suarez

The online gambling firm are examining their relationship with the Liverpool striker following the negative publicity surrounding his clash with Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini

Online gambling firm 888 Poker are reviewing their relationship with Luis Suarez following allegations he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in Tuesday’s World Cup clash in Natal.

Fifa have opened an investigation into the incident in which it appears Suarez bites Chiellini on the shoulder late in Uruguay’s 1-0 win.

If found guilty, it would be the third time in his controversial career that Suarez would have committed such an offence.

In 2010, while playing for Ajax, he received a seven-game ban for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal. In 2013 he was given a 10-game sanction for biting the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez was appointed an ambassador for 888 Poker last month. At the time the company’s senior vice-president Itai Pazner described him as “an incredible sporting talent – passionate, competitive, technically gifted and emotionally invested in the game”.

On Wednesday morning, however, they sent a tweet on their official Twitter account, stating: “Following recent allegations made against Luis Suarez, we are reviewing our relationship with him. We will not tolerate unsporting behavior.”

Fifa have until 5pm Brazil time to gather evidence in their investigation.

Scholes: Suarez an embarrassment and should be banned

The ex-England star believes that the 10-match suspension the Uruguay striker previously received for biting Branislav Ivanovic wasn’t enough given his latest indiscretion

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Luis Suarez is an embarrassment and should be given a lengthy ban following his latest biting controversy.

The Liverpool striker allegedly bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini while representing Uruguay on Tuesday, with the Juventus man seeming showing the referee bite marks on his shoulder after the incident.

And Scholes feels that suspending the forward for the remainder of the World Cup is not an option as well as feeling that the 27-year-old has tainted the memories supporters will have of his career.

Suarez embarrassed his club, country and family,” he told Paddy Power.

“Banning him for the rest of the World Cup is not enough, because Colombia will beat Uruguay in their next game anyway.

“He will feel terrible, and the entire incident is such a shame because he’s a tremendous player. But people will remember Suarez now for his biting antics at this World Cup rather than his supreme footballing ability.”

Scholes also commented that the 10-match ban that Suarez received for biting Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 “obviously wasn’t enough.”

Suarez has until 22:00CET to respond to Fifa’s decision to open disciplinary proceedings against him, with a ban of up to two years a possibility.

Fowler: Suarez has dragged Liverpool’s name through the mud

The Anfield favourite believes that the Uruguayan striker is reaching an untenable position after being accused of biting an opponent for the third time in his career

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is “continually dragging the club’s name through the mud”, according to Robbie Fowler, and may now have to be sold in the summer for the Reds’ good.

The Uruguayan unexpectedly fired his side into the Premier League title race last season, scoring 31 goals and creating 12 assists in 33 appearances, but his hopes of a summer move to Barcelona or Real Madrid may now be under threat after he was accused of biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on Tuesday.

Regardless of his quality, Fowler feels that Suarez’s position at the club may now be untenable, especially given the support that they have show to him after previous incidents.

“You can’t defend him,” the former Liverpool striker told talkSPORT. “Off the pitch he’s an absolutely lovely fella. He does so much work for charity, does so much work in the community in Liverpool and I love him as a player but you cannot condone what he has done.

“When he gets on the pitch he just becomes a different person. I’m flummoxed for words. It’s a real, real tough predicament most Liverpool fans are in. They love him as a player but he’s continually dragging the club’s name through the mud.

“It’s not right, especially after how they helped him last time. They tried to rehabilitate him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he went now.”

Should Fifa’s investigation find that Suarez did bite Chiellini in Uruguay’s 1-0 World Cup victory to progress from Group D, the punishment could well be severe given his previous record at club level.

In 2010, while playing for Ajax in the Eredivisie, he bit PSV midfielder Otman Bakkal and later received a seven-game ban for his actions. He used his teeth again in 2013 when he bit Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League match and was suspended for 10 matches.

The Football Association also found him guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011 during a match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

A Fifa ban for biting Chiellini could potentially stretch to a maximum of two years.
