Sponsor ‘reviewing relationship’ with Suarez

The online gambling firm are examining their relationship with the Liverpool striker following the negative publicity surrounding his clash with Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini

Online gambling firm 888 Poker are reviewing their relationship with Luis Suarez following allegations he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in Tuesday’s World Cup clash in Natal.

Fifa have opened an investigation into the incident in which it appears Suarez bites Chiellini on the shoulder late in Uruguay’s 1-0 win.

If found guilty, it would be the third time in his controversial career that Suarez would have committed such an offence.

In 2010, while playing for Ajax, he received a seven-game ban for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal. In 2013 he was given a 10-game sanction for biting the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez was appointed an ambassador for 888 Poker last month. At the time the company’s senior vice-president Itai Pazner described him as “an incredible sporting talent – passionate, competitive, technically gifted and emotionally invested in the game”.

On Wednesday morning, however, they sent a tweet on their official Twitter account, stating: “Following recent allegations made against Luis Suarez, we are reviewing our relationship with him. We will not tolerate unsporting behavior.”

Fifa have until 5pm Brazil time to gather evidence in their investigation.
