Liverpool? I’ll speak to Schalke first – Huntelaar

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international but the striker is remaining tight-lipped over any potential switch to Anfield

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar says he will have to have to “speak to Schalke” before contemplating a move to Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international as they line up potential replacements for Luis Suarez, with the Reds currently holding talks with Barcelona over the sale of the disgraced striker.

Huntelaar, however, is remaining coy over any speculation as he prepares for his country’s World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica.

“Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I’ve talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.

“With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament.”

Huntelaar, 30, who scored in Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Mexico in the round of 16, hit 14 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions last season.

He joined Schalke for €14 million in August 2010, but any sale is likely to be considerably less than that sum, with his current contract due to expire in June 2015.

Reina to stay at Liverpool – agent

The goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Serie A side Napoli but his representative has now confirmed that his client will not return to the Italian outfit

Pepe Reina will stay at Liverpool next season rather than return to Napoli, according to the goalkeeper’s agent.

The Spain international spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at the San Paolo and revealed during the World Cup that he was unsure what the future would hold.

A permanent switch away from Anfield looked the most likely outcome for Reina ahead of the new season, but the 31-year-old’s representative, Manuel Garcia Quilon, has stated that the former Villarreal man plans to stay at Liverpool.

“I am aware of the rumours circulating about the future of Reina,” he told Tutto Napoli. “But I confirm to you that Pepe will play for Liverpool next season.

“Yes [there will be no return to Napoli]. Reina will respect his contract with the English club.”

Reina was allowed to leave by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers after the Northern Irishman signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland.

‘I want to be a champion next season’ – Emre Can aims high after sealing Liverpool move

The 20-year-old insists his new club are capable of winning the Premier League and believes Brendan Rodgers’ side can be on the same level as German giants Bayern Munich

Emre Can says he is aiming to win the Premier League title with Liverpool next season after completing his move from Bayer Levekusen.

The two clubs agreed a deal in principle last month but the 20-year-old midfielder has now become Brendan Rodgers’ third signing of the summer after Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, who both arrived from Southampton.

“I believe this season the team finished second in the league, so I want to be a Premier League champion next season,” Can told the club’s official website.

“It was an easy decision for me to sign with Liverpool as I had a very good chat with the manager, which clearly showed that the club and he wanted to sign me. This was important for me. I can say it was an easy decision for me.”

Can, who has represented Germany at Under-21 level, began his youth career at Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to Bayern Munich at the age of 15.

Can made just six first-team appearances for the German champions before he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen but the midfielder maintains he learnt a great deal from his time at Bayern.

He added: “I am very thankful for my time at Bayern Munich, I played there for four years. It was a great honour to play for one of the biggest and best teams in the world.

“However, I am at Liverpool now and this is where my sole focus is. I believe Liverpool football club can be on a similar level to Bayern Munich next season.

“There were a couple of players [who influenced me]. At Bayern Munich, for example, there was Franck Ribery, who I got along with very well and who I have spoken with a lot. He obviously became European Footballer of the Year, hence there is a lot to learn from him on the training pitch.

“In my position especially, I also learned a lot from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Luiz Gustavo. They helped my development.

“I don’t regret leaving Bayern Munich. I am convinced it was the correct step for me. I played a lot at Bayer Leverkusen.

“I played in the Champions League and in the Bundesliga. I have played a lot of games and it was a very good decision to go to Leverkusen. During the year, I matured and developed massively.”
