Liverpool? I’ll speak to Schalke first – Huntelaar

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international but the striker is remaining tight-lipped over any potential switch to Anfield

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar says he will have to have to “speak to Schalke” before contemplating a move to Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a move for the Netherlands international as they line up potential replacements for Luis Suarez, with the Reds currently holding talks with Barcelona over the sale of the disgraced striker.

Huntelaar, however, is remaining coy over any speculation as he prepares for his country’s World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica.

“Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first,” he told De Telegraaf.

“I’ve talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.

“With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament.”

Huntelaar, 30, who scored in Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Mexico in the round of 16, hit 14 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions last season.

He joined Schalke for €14 million in August 2010, but any sale is likely to be considerably less than that sum, with his current contract due to expire in June 2015.
