Suarez ‘proud’ of rumoured Real Madrid interest

The Liverpool striker, who is contracted until 2016, says constant criticism from journalists is affecting his time in England, hinting it could drive him away from Anfield

Luis Suarez has opened the door to a Liverpool exit after admitting he cannot take constant criticism of his conduct and is proud to be linked with Real Madrid .

As exclusively revealed by Goal earlier on Wednesday, the striker has refused to commit himself to the Anfield outfit despite holding two meetings with the club hierarchy in recent weeks.

Suarez is believed to be a target for Real Madrid as Gonzalo Higuain looks increasingly likely to leave the Liga runners-up during the summer, and the 26-year-old admits such interest in himself and fellow compatriot Edinson Cavani is flattering.

“Saying no to Real Madrid is very difficult,” he told Sport 890 AM.

“I think that’s a reason for Uruguayans to feel proud, but there are no formal offers yet.

“I talked to Brendan Rodgers. He knows what I want and understands my situation.”

Suarez is currently serving a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic; the incident the latest in a long line of misdemeanours the striker has committed.

Goal revealed in January that the former Ajax man, who is contracted with the club until 2016, was considering his future at Anfield, with Champions League football a long-held desire, and he admitted constant negative press is affecting his time in England.

“I worked too hard to having to continue listening to the criticism I get from English journalists,” he continued.

“I love Liverpool, but I’m not prepared to keep taking all this criticism.

Reina: It would be hard to turn down Barcelona

The 30-year-old goalkeeper is happy at Anfield but says it would be tough to ignore an approach from the Liga champions should they make an offer

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina admits it would be difficult to refuse a move to Barcelona, though he insists he is happy at Anfield.

The 30-year-old has been a reported target for the Catalan club some time and with Victor Valdes believed to be close to joining AS Monaco, a deal could happen this summer.

Speaking at a press conference to reveal his new website, Reina stressed there had been no official approach from the Liga champions, although he confessed it would be tough to turn them down.

“Barcelona is a great club and it is difficult to say no to a club like Barcelona,” he said. “But we are talking about assumptions and I should not do it.

“It would be difficult leave Liverpool. If I do it, [it] is [to] improve and grow as player.

“I have no evidence about Barcelona’s interest in me. I don’t know if the club has spoken with my agent. If he doesn’t say something it is because there isn’t any serious offer on the table.

“I have a contract with Liverpool and I’m very happy in England. At present, I just have one option: stay at Liverpool. Everything else is just talk. There has been no direct contact.”

Reina, who began his career at Camp Nou, has been with the Anfield club since 2005.

Transfer Talk: Suarez, Fabregas, Bale and the race for Barcelona’s Deulofeu

We run through the latest talking points in world football, and which stars could be on the move this summer

The European transfer market has erupted, thanks in no small part to AS Monaco, following swoops for Porto pair Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez, with Radamel Falcao set to join them this week. And of course, Neymar’s heading to Barcelona.

The Brazilian’s arrival at Camp Nou could kick-start a period of transition with the Liga champions, with David Villa, Thiago Alcantara, Gerard Deulofeu and even Cesc Fabregas possibly leaving this summer.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are in the hunt for new Galacticos, and with Zinedine Zidane tasked with luring a new batch of stars to the Bernabeu, could the likes of Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez be heading to the Spanish capital?

To discuss these and all the other whispers, Matt Lorenzo is joined by Goal‘s Greg Stobart and former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Gary McAllister as we go through the latest talk from the transfer market.
