Sturridge can be a top European forward, insists Liverpool boss Rodgers

The 23-year-old bagged a hat-trick as the Reds coasted to a 3-1 win over Fulham and his boss says he can become one of the continent’s best

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes Daniel Sturridge can fulfill his potential and become a top European striker.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward has spearheaded the Reds’ attack while Luis Suarez has been missing through suspension and has been prolific in the Uruguayan’s absence.

His hat-trick at Craven Cottage on Sunday saw his manager shower him with praise, suggesting the England international can go on to become one of the best marksmen on the continent.

“I’ve been mightily impressed by Daniel Sturridge. He is a young player who has got all the attributes to be a top European forward,” he told reporters after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Fulham. The Reds could have scored plenty more but were wasteful with their finishing, though Rodgers emphasised the importance of focusing on the positives of his side’s performance and has backed his team to challenge for the Champions League spots next season.

“We were very exciting. Going forward we were really creative. We scored three and could have had more. It was a terrific second half performance,” he continued.

“I think we can have an exciting season next year. We can build. We need more depth in the summer. We will be looking for a real sustainable challenge for the top four.”

Meanwhile, a downbeat Martin Jol refused to blame a lack of effort for his side’s recent run of poor form, a run which has seen them lose six of their last seven games.

“We were very happy to be on 40 points but we haven’t been able to get a result since to be on 46 or 47,” the Dutchman told reporters.

“If you look at the effort we’ve put in against Chelsea, Arsenal and even today, there’s nothing wrong with the effort or application or mentality, but when we’ve needed to change the game to score, we’ve looked a bit vulnerable.”

The Cottagers’ boss believes Fulham have a lot of work to do in the summer to ensure they don’t tail off again, and feels the the club could need as many as six new players ahead of next season.

“We need four, five or six players but that’s normal at any club,” he stated. “We need to strengthen.”

“Our home form was always good last year. Last year we could score out of nothing; we had Clint Dempsey to score winners. With Dimitar Berbatov, we gained somebody who could score goals but we lost things in other areas.”

Fulham 1-3 Liverpool: Sturridge steals the show as Reds dominate

A hat-trick from Daniel Sturridge increased Liverpool’s unbeaten streak in the Premier League to seven games as they beat a fragile Fulham side 3-1 at Craven Cottage.

After an impressive opening 30 minutes, the hosts took the lead through a Dimitar Berbatov header shortly after the half-hour mark but Liverpool replied instantly through Sturridge just three minutes later.

After another strong start from Fulham in the second half, the former Chelsea player then scored again to double his and Liverpool’s tally from close range after 63 minutes before the job was completed with a beautiful flick over Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with just five minutes left to play.

Brendan Rodgers made three changes to his Liverpool side, bringing in Andre Wisdom, Sebastian Coates and Jonjo Shelvey to replace Daniel Agger, Jose Enrique and club captain Steven Gerrard.

Martin Jol, meanwhile, also made three changes to the Fulham side that lost 4-2 to relegated Reading last weekend, with Phillippe Senderos, John Arne Riise and Urby Emanuelson dropping to the bench to make way for Aaron Hughes, Kieran Richardson and Alexander Kacaniklic.

Sitting just five points clear of the relegation zone with two games left to play and without a win in their last six Premier League clashes, Fulham’s lacklustre start to their final home game to the season would have done little to fill the confidence of the Craven Cottage faithful.

Richardson’s injury woes seem to be never-ending and the 28-year-old had to be replaced by Emanuelson after only 15 minutes, but the Dutchman’s introduction proved to have a positive effect on the home side and led to promising attacking and link-up play between the on-loan left-back and Kacaniklic.

Fulham’s determination paid off when Berbatov was able head them into the lead shortly after the half-hour mark thanks to poor marking in the centre of the box from Liverpool. Sascha Riether, on loan from Cologne, was teed up on the right of the visitor’s penalty area by Damien Duff before sending in a superb cross to the unmarked Bulgarian in front of goal to put them ahead for the first time in a game since their 3-2 win at home to QPR at the start of April.

Liverpool replied instantly, however, after fantastic play from Sturridge in which he turned one way and then the other to beat Hughes before blasting the ball past Schwarzer to even up the scoreline again after a manic three minutes.

Despite conceding so quickly after scoring, Fulham ended the first half on the front foot but Liverpool made sure that the emphasis was with them when the two sides returned onto the pitch after the half time break.

Sturridge, seemingly undeterred by the boos from the home fans, started particularly strongly and was handed an early chance to double his tally when Stewart Downing’s cross found the England international’s head just a minute into the half, but his effort ended up sailing over the bar.

Liverpool set up camp in Fulham’s half of the pitch and were determined to stay put, but the hosts fought their way back into the game after early dominance from the visitors and carved out several chances of their own.

Fulham’s pressing for an equaliser led to strong shouts for a penalty from the home fans and players alike when Bryan Ruiz’s cross struck Lucas’ hand on the edge of the six yard box, but referee Mark Halsey waved away the plethora of protests.

In similar fashion to the first half, Liverpool replied immediately to a threat at the other end and, once again, it was Sturridge who finished off an impressive attacking movement when he was picked out in front of goal by a slick pass from Phillippe Coutinho and slotted the ball past Schwarzer from close-range to make it 2-1.

The chances continued for the visitors as they picked apart a fragile Fulham defence, but somehow a third goal evaded them, despite their dominance in the final third leading to a host of close chances in which both Downing and substitute Fabio Borini hit the post.

Sturridge was finally rewarded for his, and his team’s, efforts when he wrapped up his hat-trick with five minutes left to play, chipping the ball over a fast-approaching Schwarzer after yet another fantastic assist from Countinho.

Suarez will learn from biting ban, says Jol

The Fulham manager recruited the Uruguayan when he was in charge of Ajax and concedes that he has a “problem” but is confident that he will come back even better

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has a “problem” with biting but will learn from his 10-game suspension, feels Fulham manager Martin Jol.
The Dutchman signed the striker when he was in charge of Eredivisie giants Ajax, where the Uruguayan landed himself in hot water by sinking his teeth into Ottman Bakkal in November 2010.

He has since repeated the offence on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic but Jol, who describes his former charge as “a nice boy”, is confident that he will grow up.

“Luis is a terrific player but he has this problem. He did it with me in Holland,” the Cottagers’ boss told reporters.

“He will learn from this and he will be better next year.”

Jol revealed that Suarez, who scored 30 goals this season before his suspension, has visited him for advice whenever Fulham have played near Liverpool.

The striker will be unavailable for the Reds when they visit Craven Cottage on Sunday.
