Carragher hails 6-0 Newcastle win as Liverpool’s performance of the season

The veteran Reds defender lauds his team’s showing amidst some tricky circumstances against the Magpies, with Daniel Sturridge earning particular praise for his goals

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has heralded the Reds’ 6-0 rout over Newcastle as his side’s performance of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’s side romped to a victory as two doubles, courtesy of Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson, and a goal apiece from Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini were enough to consign the Magpies to an embarrassing defeat.

35-year-old Carragher, set to retire at the end of the season, emphasised his respect for Newcastle as he lauded his team’s performance at a club that are struggling against relegation.

Asked by ESPN if it was Liverpool’s best performance of the campaign, the defender agreed: “I think so, yeah, to come to Newcastle. We know they’re fighting for their lives and it was going to be a really tough game – it normally is when we come here – but it was one of those days for us and unfortunate for them.

“Newcastle are a great club and I don’t think many people want to see them go down. So we’re pleased we’ve beat them, we can move on, but obviously I’d like to see them stay up.”

The Liverpool veteran went on to extol the virtues of goalscorer Sturridge, while he was also eager to further praise the “top performance” amidst some difficult circumstances.

“Obviously, we all know what’s gone on this week and it’s probably been a bit difficult for the team and maybe the management and the staff to focus on this game, there’s been so much more going on,” he continued, “but we’ve put in a top performance at a difficult place, even though they’re not doing as well as they normally would.

“St James’ Park is always a difficult place to come but it’s a great result for us and, as I said, [Sturridge] has come in over the last few games and changed the game last week against Chelsea, he’s played up front and got two goals.”
