Suarez could face Fifa wrap over Jara punch

The striker appeared to lash out at his opponent during Uruguay’s 2-0 loss to Chile but will not know the extent of any suspension until the match official’s report is reviewed

Fifa have insisted the decision on whether to punish Liverpool & Uruguay forward Luis Suarez for his altercation with Chile defender Gonzalo Jara cannot be made until the referee’s report is filed.

Match official Nestor Pitana took no action against the striker after he appeared to punch the Nottingham Forest loanee as the pair battled in the box during Tuesday evening’s World Cup qualifier in Santiago.

However, television replays of the incident have been widely circulated and the former Ajax man, who will already miss his country’s next competitive fixture against Venezuela after being booked for dissent, could now face further punishment.

A spokesman told the Daily Mail: “We are still collecting all the post-match reports, as the referees have 24 hours to file them. Based on the mentioned reports, FIFA will then act accordingly.”

Uruguay’s 2-0 defeat means they now sit two points behind Chile, who occupy the fourth and final World Cup qualification spot for South America.
