Rodgers hails return of Lucas following Liverpool win over Southampton

Brendan Rodgers has lavished praise on Lucas after the Brazilian returned to action in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds turned in one of their most impressive performances as they ended the Saints’ four-game unbeaten run to move up to 11th in the Premier League courtesy of a Daniel Agger header.

But it was the stability and foundation Lucas provided that pleased Rodgers the most, as he commended the 25-year-old post-match.

“With Lucas you can see all of a sudden with the right profile player in the right position it frees up the offensive threats,” he told reporters.

“I thought the rhythm and balance of the game was great with him there. Until we get the exact profile of player in each position – as we saw with Lucas today – we will still be building towards where we want to go.

“It’s a steep climb but I hope people can see now we’re on the move.”

Although Nigel Adkins saw his side fall to the solitary goal, he chose to praise the Reds for what he suggested was the most impressive display he had witnessed since Southampton returned to the Premier League.

“I thought some of the movement today from Liverpool was as good as we have played against this season.” Adkins told the Daily Mirror.
