Rodgers: Liverpool can challenge for title in coming years

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that, in the coming years, there is no reason why his side cannot challenge for the Premier League title.

The Reds currently sit in a lowly 12th but, ahead of tomorrow’s clash with his former club Swansea City, the Northern Irishman has confirmed his high hopes for the future.

Liverpool have not finished in a Champions League berth since Rafa Benitez was at the helm and are currently nine points off their ex-coach’s new employers, Chelsea, who sit in fourth place.

Rodgers is keen to emphasise that, though rebuilding is a necessity, they can challenge in the near future and give the fans some well-earned success.

“There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t [challenge] over the next numbers of years. Sometimes you’ve got to drop a few levels before you build,” he told BBC‘s Football Focus.

“We’ll get there in the end; there’s absolutely no question about that. As a group of supporters, these fans deserve it.”

Luis Suarez currently leads the Premier League goalscoring charts with 10 strikes in 12 games this season, and Rodgers was eager to lavish the in-form Uruguayan with praise ahead of Sunday’s game.

“When you train with him, you can see why managers and coaches love him and why supporters idolise him – because he gives his all,” the former Swansea coach continued.

“His performance levels have been incredible, he trains every single day, he’s never injured and never in the medical room. Working with this guy is just an absolute dream.”
