Liverpool – Stoke City Betting Preview: Expect goals at both ends at Anfield

Liverpool are still looking for their first home win in the Premier League so far this season but after tough fixtures against both Manchester clubs and Arsenal they’ll fancy their chances against Stoke.

The 5-2 win at Norwich last time out in the league was a source of real encouragement that there are goals in this Brendan Rodgers team after all.

But the Reds will need to produce that sort of form at Anfield to really convince supporters they have turned the corner.

Liverpool are 47/100 (1.47) with Marathon Bet to pick up three points against the Potters on Sunday.

Stoke drew their first four Premier League games of the season and were then unlucky to lose late on at Chelsea in their last away game.

But Tony Pulis and his side – now including ex-Liverpool man Michael Owen – picked up their first win at home to Swansea last weekend to boost confidence going into this one and should prove tough opponents as ever.

Stoke are 73/10 (8.30) with Marathon Bet to beat Liverpool as they did at the Britannia Stadium last season and 69/20 (4.45) to repeat the Anfield draw they managed in the corresponding fixture earlier this year.

Liverpool failed to score in either league match last term – in fact there was just one goal between the two sides. As a result, it could be tempting to back under 2.5 goals at 99/100 (1.99).

But the truth is that this is a different Liverpool team under Rodgers and recent scores of 5-3 at Young Boys and 5-2 at Norwich indicate that they are attempting a more expansive game.

They’re certainly conceding goals – they’ve let in 12 this season in just six Premier League games and are still looking for that first clean sheet.

Stoke are a little more circumspect but ‘Both teams to score’ has still paid out in the majority of their matches this season and yet is available at 28/25 (2.12) here with Marathon Bet.

That’s the pick of the bets in this one. For the value bet, consider that Liverpool have let in nine league goals after the interval so far this season and conceded the last goal in five of their six league matches.

As a result, tip Stoke to score last against the odds at 53/20 (3.65) with Marathon Bet.

Gerrard: I can still improve under Rodgers

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard insists he can still develop and improve his game under Brendan Rodgers.

The 32-year-old, who has scored in the Reds’ last two games in the league against Manchester United and Norwich, believes Rodgers’ different footballing philosophy will see him have to adapt his performances for the team.

“Yes, I do, because he’s got a different philosophy and way of playing to other managers I’ve worked for,” Gerrard told BBC program ‘Football Focus’.

“There are certainly things I can still improve on by working with him. I’m enjoying working with him on a daily basis, and I think my form recently has been really good.

“I’m enjoying my football, and I’m really looking forward to the next two years I’m contracted for and hopefully more, to add some chapters to a career I’m really proud of.”

The England skipper believes that Liverpool will gain momentum following their 5-2 win at Carrow Road last week and wants to continue their forward momentum against Stoke City on Sunday.

He explained: “We’re six games in, we should have a few more points than we’ve got, but I believe now the win against Norwich will be the catalyst to push us on.

“They are good opportunities but they’re also tough games as well.”

“If I’m realistic, they are games we should be winning, certainly at home.

If selected to face Stoke, Gerrard will make his 595th appearance for his beloved club and he admits he never thought he would one day approach 600 games.

“No, not at all, the dream for me was always just to play once, to be able to say I’d played for the team I supported as a young boy,” he said.

“To be closing in on 600 games for Liverpool and nearly 100 caps – if someone had said I’d be there at 32 I’d have bitten their hand off.”

Charlie Adam: I quit Liverpool for chance of first-team football at Stoke

Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam revealed he did not feel like a player during his short spell at Liverpool, ahead of the two side’s Premier League encounter.

Adam believes he made the right choice leaving Anfield after only a year at the club, opting to join Tony Pulis’ Stoke for £4 million (€5m).

The Scotland international knew he was not part of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans at Liverpool and says he was never going to settle only making a handful of appearances.

“I want to be a footballer – and that means playing on a Saturday afternoon,” Adam told the Telegraph.

“I could have stayed at Liverpool and played maybe 15 to 20 times a season, but that isn’t enough for me.

“I want to play 30 to 40 times a season.

“For me, playing on a Saturday is what being in this profession is all about and thankfully I’m at a club where the manager wants to use me.

“Obviously I know that I have to perform to stay in the team and I’m happy with that.

“We have good competition here and that is only a good thing for every member of the squad.”

Adam is grateful to Kenny Dalglish for giving him the chance to play at such a big club and does not hold any bitterness towards Rodgers, as he looks forward to a return to Anfield.

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to it,” said the former Blackpool player. “It will be nice to go back and see a few familiar faces again.

“I was there for a year and it was a special year for me. Playing for a club the size of Liverpool was a real experience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

“I’m a Stoke player now, though, and I’m looking forward to going back to Anfield and hopefully getting the three points.

“If we can perform the way we know we can, then we can win the game for sure.”
