Rodgers happy with steel developing in Liverpool squad

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has stated that the most important aspect of the Reds’ recent performances has been the “steel” he can see in the team, rather than the short-passing style he is attempting to impose.

Rodgers’ side have struggled for form in the Premier League, picking up just two points from four games, but with last week’s comeback to earn a point at Sunderland – and a 5-3 away win against Young Boys in the Europa League – the 39-year-old feels that Liverpool’s luck is beginning to change.

“Everyone talks about the style we [Liverpool] are trying to produce, but what is more important to me is the steel in the team, and we are starting to see that. That will be important for us going forward,” he told reporters.

“Our players have been outstanding since I came in here. We haven’t had the rub of the green in some of the games but our spirit is getting better and stronger, the more we get to work with each other. You could see that in the last two games.”

Of their recent form, Rodgers said: “Sunderland was a difficult place to go. We were 1-0 down having dominated and then in the second half we really stepped it up and the point was the least we deserved. Then, on Thursday [in Switzerland against Young Boys] – that takes character.

“The confidence is fine. There have been a couple of adjustments in terms of what I have asked the players to do, but in terms of their output, it has been fantastic.”

With stuttering league form, a visit from Manchester United is probably not the ideal game in which to be seeking a first league win of the season, but Rodgers is looking forward to the Sunday afternoon clash between the arch-rivals.

He added: “This is a game I have grown up with as the biggest game in British football.

“I am looking forward to the game, it is a good test. Manchester United are a terrific side.

“To be involved right in the middle of it is wonderful, and it should be a wonderful game.”

Jonny Evans: Liverpool versus Manchester United is one of the biggest games in English football

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans cannot wait to face Liverpool in the latest installment of a rivalry which he describes as one of the biggest in English football.

Sunday’s match will be the Reds’ first at Anfield since the shocking findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel were published.

The revelations have led to tributes from other Premier League clubs, including an emotional display at Goodison Park on Monday evening when Everton paid their respects to their Merseyside rivals.

The timing of the fixture only adds to the significance of a clash between English football’s two most successful clubs, and Evans admits facing Liverpool at Anfield is an experience every United player looks forward to.

“It’s always a big occasion but one every Manchester United player relishes,” he told reporters.

“It’s something you never forget but with the atmosphere and the stick you get as well, it’s all part of it.

“We enjoy that side of it and it’s going to be a really big game.

“The distance thing, the Merseyside-Manchester rivalry and all the history that goes with it means it will be no different on Sunday.

“You can go through tactics and talk about how many points the teams have this season but it all goes out of the window when it comes to a Manchester United-Liverpool game.

“There is goodness knows how many years of rivalry to take into account as well.

The Red Devils have not beat Brendan Rogers’ men at Anfield since 2007 something which Jones hopes to change on Sunday.

He added: “We haven’t had great results away at Liverpool in the last couple of years so it’s up to us to put that right.”
