Jonny Evans: Liverpool versus Manchester United is one of the biggest games in English football

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans cannot wait to face Liverpool in the latest installment of a rivalry which he describes as one of the biggest in English football.

Sunday’s match will be the Reds’ first at Anfield since the shocking findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel were published.

The revelations have led to tributes from other Premier League clubs, including an emotional display at Goodison Park on Monday evening when Everton paid their respects to their Merseyside rivals.

The timing of the fixture only adds to the significance of a clash between English football’s two most successful clubs, and Evans admits facing Liverpool at Anfield is an experience every United player looks forward to.

“It’s always a big occasion but one every Manchester United player relishes,” he told reporters.

“It’s something you never forget but with the atmosphere and the stick you get as well, it’s all part of it.

“We enjoy that side of it and it’s going to be a really big game.

“The distance thing, the Merseyside-Manchester rivalry and all the history that goes with it means it will be no different on Sunday.

“You can go through tactics and talk about how many points the teams have this season but it all goes out of the window when it comes to a Manchester United-Liverpool game.

“There is goodness knows how many years of rivalry to take into account as well.

The Red Devils have not beat Brendan Rogers’ men at Anfield since 2007 something which Jones hopes to change on Sunday.

He added: “We haven’t had great results away at Liverpool in the last couple of years so it’s up to us to put that right.”
