‘My priority now is Liverpool’ – watch Steven Gerrard’s interview after England retirement

The veteran midfielder voiced his frustration over a disappointing World Cup campaign, but is excited by the new signings at Anfield following a busy summer of transfer activity

Steven Gerrard has already turned his attention to Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge following his retirement from international football.

The 34-year-old midfielder brought an end to his England career after 114 caps and 21 goals on Monday.

Gerrard, who says he is “still in a grieving process” after his country’s elimination from the 2014 World Cup at the group stages, believes all eyes will be on the Anfield side next season as they aim to launch another Premier League title challenge, this time without Luis Suarez.

“My priority now, obviously moving forward, is Liverpool, and trying to finish my Liveprool career on a high,” he explained.

“I’ve got a year left on my contract so for me the focus is this seasona nd trying to have a good season from a personal point of view, to play to my maximum, to hit top form and hopefully then I can contribute to the team doing well.

“Brendan [Rodgers, Liverpool boss] has created a fantastic team here and a very enjoyable way of playing and we’ve added some top players to the squad from last year.

“Of course we’ve lost a world class talent in Luis [Suarez] so all eyes are on us.”

Wisdom set for West Brom loan from Liverpool

The 21-year-old featured in the Reds’ 2-1 win over Preston on Saturday, but his manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed the player will spend the season with the Baggies

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed defender Andre Wisdom is set to join West Brom on loan.

The versatile 21-year-old, who was loaned out to Championship side Derby County last term, played in Liverpool’s pre-season friendly at Preston North End on Saturday.

However, after seeing his side triumph 2-1 at Deepdale, Rodgers confirmed Wisdom is poised to spend another season away from Anfield.

“After today, Andre is going to go on loan to West Brom,” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

“He had a very successful period at Derby last year, he did very well under Steve McClaren.

“He now has the opportunity to go to another very good coach in Alan Irvine, who I know from my youth days. He is an excellent coach and West Brom are an excellent club.

“West Brom have been a rising club for the last few years in the Premier League. He’ll go there and it will be another chance for his education and development to continue.

“He’ll join up with them sooner rather than later and spend the season there on loan. That will be another step for him in his development, playing regularly in the Premier League.”

Wisdom has made 14 Premier League appearances for Liverpool and captained England at Under-21 level.
