Liverpool youngster Suso set for two-month lay-off

The 20-year-old has been suffering with a groin injury and will now undergo surgery, sidelining him for up to eight weeks, but is looking forward to returning “stronger than ever”

Liverpool midfielder Suso could miss two months of action as he requires surgery on a groin injury.

The 20-year-old was part of the travelling party for Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Basel on Wednesday, but was not included among the substitutes.

Subsequently, the Spaniard has revealed that he has been suffering with a groin complaint and is set to go under the knife next week.

“Just to tell you I’ll be out of the team for a couple of months,” Suso wrote on Instagram.

“I’m having surgery next week because of my groin. I’ll be back soon. Stronger than ever.”

Suso made his senior Liverpool debut in September 2012, but has struggled to nail down a regular first-team place at Anfield and spent last term on loan at Almeria.

His only appearance this season saw him come off the bench to score in the League Cup third-round victory over Middlesbrough.

Sousa: Basel could have beaten Liverpool by more

The Portuguese hailed a “historic” 1-0 win over the Reds in the Champions League but says the margin of victory could easily have been greater

Basel coach Paulo Sousa says his side could have beaten Liverpool by more than 1-0 in their “historic” Champions League win on Wednesday.

Captain Marco Streller converted a 53rd-minute corner secure a victory at St Jakob Park and boost Basel’s chances of reaching the next round.

Sousa was delighted with the victory, but was even more impressed by his team’s performance.

“I’m very happy. It’s a great win,” the Portuguese said. “I knew we needed a great performance from each individual player if we wanted to beat a team like Liverpool – and we did that. We defended well, played well and had chances to get more goals.

“We could have won by more … against Liverpool! Look at the players they have playing there.”

Basel, who have also beaten English trio Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham in the past four years, lost their opening game to Real Madrid but are now second in the group, ahead of the Reds.

Sousa said: “We have given ourselves a huge amount of confidence with this success. It gives us a boost. We were proactive in the game and didn’t just wait for them. That was decisive. Our fans gave us tremendous support. It was glorious, historic, for me, the players, the fans and the club.”

Basel, who are level on three points with Liverpool after two games, next play Group B minnows Ludogorets home and away while the Reds have a double header against group-leaders Real Madrid.

Gerrard slams ‘soft’ Liverpool: It’s not good enough

The Reds followed up an unconvincing victory over Ludogorets with a 1-0 defeat in Basel and the club captain admits that his side deserved nothing from the Group B game

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that his side were “soft” in their Champions League defeat by Basel and admits that their start to the season is simply not good enough.

The Reds were undone in Switzerland by a Marco Streller goal after they failed to clear a set-piece and could not find an equaliser.

Gerrard described Basel as only an “okay team” and was again left to rue his side’s fragility from the dead ball.

“We created a good few openings where you would expect us to go and score but we didn’t deserve anything out of this match,” the midfielder told Sky Sports.

“We were too soft all over the pitch and they wanted it more than us, which is very disappointing. Conceding again from set pieces isn’t good enough and we need to get it right.

“We were second best at times. Against an okay team, I wouldn’t say we were played off the park or they were fantastic but we made it easy for them. We wanted something out of this game, at least a draw. We came for the win and I expected us to win and so it’s very disappointing.

“We’ll discuss it and analyse. There were signs against Everton that we were getting back to where we want to be – we were aggressive without the ball – but we went back to the way we’ve been all season and it’s not good enough.”

Liverpool now face Real Madrid in back-to-back games in the Champions League, on October 22 at Anfield and November 4 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
