Mourinho: Suarez talking ‘s**t’ in new book

The Portuguese is unmoved by the former Liverpool ace’s claim that a Blues player told him he was under orders to time-waste right from the start of last season’s trip to Anfield

Jose Mourinho has hit back at Luis Suarez’s references to Chelsea’s tactics during last season’s crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool in his new autobiography, saying that he would never write “a book to tell s**t and to criticise people and to speak negative things”.

Within the pages of ‘Crossing the Line’, Suarez recalls questioning an unnamed Blues player over the visitors’ perceived time-wasting from the start of last season’s encounter at Anfield, only for his opponent to reply: “What do you want me to do? If [Mourinho] makes us play like this, I have to play like this. What else can I do? If I don’t, I won’t play. What would you do?”

But Mourinho, who recently suggested that Roy Keane’s public criticism of him was motivated by the desire to sell books, was unmoved when presented with Suarez’s latest revelation.

“Another book,” a shrugging Mourinho remarked to reporters. “Books … Do you read these books? I don’t. At 51, I might have enough story to write one but when you are 25? Do you write a book about when you were a kid? I don’t think I will [do a book].

“I have an invitation to do a picture book, just with 100 photographs I’d choose of my career, and I’d just make a little comment on every picture. A memory book but not a book to tell s**t and to criticise people and to speak negative things about people who belong to my career.”

Chelsea return to Anfield on Saturday as unbeaten Premier League leaders and Mourinho expects Liverpool to attack his side from the outset again.

“I expect a game where Liverpool know that, if they lose, they are 15 points behind,” he added. “If they are 15 points behind in November, obviously it’s not over for them but it’s difficult. If they win, nine points behind is different to 15. It’s a very good motivation for them so I expect them to try and win.

“As for us, we knew in the first 11 matches we would have to go to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool, so we knew for sure we’d have the most difficult fixtures of every team. The fixtures were very, very difficult. If, after 11 matches, we had been in a mid-table position because we had lost three matches, it would have been something normal, very acceptable.

“When we leave Anfield, we will have left behind three of the most difficult stadiums to play in all season. The points we are getting against the other contenders – one here, one there, three here, three there – are important points.”

Liverpool-Chelsea Preview: Rodgers wants no more slip-ups

The Reds face a fixture that evokes painful memories of the defeat that derailed their title dreams last season as they struggle to find their form

Brendan Rodgers has called on Liverpool to banish memories of their last home clash with Chelsea and kick-start their season on Saturday.

Captain Steven Gerrard made a costly slip as Demba Ba pounced on the loose ball and went on to open the scoring at Anfield last term, with Jose Mourinho’s men going on to win 2-0 and end Liverpool’s Premier League dreams.

The Merseysiders headed into that fixture in April top of the table and on the back of an incredible 11-game winning streak, but eventually lost out on the title to Manchester City by two points after losing to Chelsea and surrendering a three-goal lead to draw with Crystal Palace.

Liverpool’s form going into this season’s fixture at Anfield is in stark contrast to back then, though, as they sit 12 points behind unbeaten league leaders Chelsea after just 10 games.

However, Rodgers believes this meeting with Mourinho’s side could provide a springboard for the remainder of their season.

“This weekend’s game against Chelsea is obviously a big game,” the Liverpool boss told reporters. “We’ll have learnt from last season’s defeat to them, it’ll be tough though. They’re the best team in the league at the moment, that’s why they are top of the league.

“When we play at Anfield, no matter the opponent, we have every confidence we can go on and get a result.

“This game offers us a great chance at home to get a result and can kick-start the season for us.”

The match will unquestionably stir some bad memories for Gerrard, but Rodgers says his skipper deserves credit for the way he has recovered from the embarrassing incident.

“I think Gerrard recovering mentally shows the magnificent response from him,” he continued. “There was no blame, [it was] just unfortunate.

“He was instrumental to our run last year and how well we played. He’s a big character and bounced back well from that.”

Chelsea – four points clear of Southampton at the top – were chasing Liverpool when the sides met in April, but with the roles reversed this time around, defender Branislav Ivanovic believes the change of circumstances will make for a completely different encounter.

“Last season was completely different from this one,” he remarked. “It was three games to go, they were fighting for the title and they wanted to win – they struggled in a must-win.

“Now we are top of the table. We know it’s difficult at Anfield, but also our team knows how to win there. We know what we have to do.”

Liverpool boss Rodgers has hinted he could ring the changes once again, with the likes of Gerrard and Raheem Sterling likely to return after their rest at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He added: “This isn’t a computer game. We’re dealing with the reality of lots of games in a short space of time. We need to make changes.”

Daniel Sturridge (calf) remains sidelined for Rodgers’ side, while Chelsea’s Loic Remy (muscle) is likely to be missing and John Obi Mikel (knee) is a doubt.

Suarez hits out at Mourinho methods

The former Liverpool striker cannot understand the Portuguese manager’s time-wasting tactics after Liverpool’s defeat by Chelsea in last season’s Premier League run-in

Luis Suarez has hit out at Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s tactics in last season’s dramatic win over Liverpool.

Goals from Demba Ba and Willian secured victory for the Blues in April as the Reds fell short in the title race, with Mourinho criticised by Brendan Rodgers for “parking two buses rather than one”.

And Suarez, who has since joined Barcelona in an €88 million deal, believes that the time-wasting methods used by the former Real Madrid boss were baffling despite their effectiveness.

“Every coach has his methods – that’s not important to me – but I don’t like his way of time-wasting from the very start,” he wrote in his autobiography, ‘Crossing The Line’.

“I asked myself: ‘But why does he do this from the first minute?’ I even asked one of his players and he said to me: ‘What do you want me to do? If it makes us play well, I have to do it. What else can I do? If I don’t, I won’t play any more.’

“We were playing at home and a draw would have been good for us. I didn’t expect Chelsea to go for a draw – only a win would have helped them. For them wasting time wasn’t good. I didn’t understand.

“We didn’t play well but there wasn’t much else that we could do. They had 10 players in front of us, most of them within their area. We could try to draw them out of position by moving the ball quickly but then another defender appeared before us.

“It’s hard when you see that there’s no room to move in and we saw that time was running out. His way of playing to the lock frustrated us. Mourinho know that if they wasted time, we would get frustrated, play crazily and do anything.”

The Reds host Mourinho’s side on Saturday with the Blues unbeaten in all competitions this season while Rodgers’ team have won just once in their last five outings.
