Liverpool, Inter & Monaco to face FFP investigation

Uefa have announced that seven clubs have been asked to give reasons for their overspending in the financial years ending 2012 and 2013

Inter , Liverpool , Monaco and Roma are among seven clubs to be investigated by Uefa over breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

All four have returned to European competition this season after missing out in 2013-14, but have fallen foul of Uefa’s FFP laws which demand that clubs lose no more than €45 million over the three-year period of 2011-14.

The European governing body has announced that the seven clubs – which also include Besiktas, Sporting Lisbon and FC Krasnodar – have submitted financial reports for the periods ending 2012 and 2013 which show break-even deficits.

The Uefa Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) has now asked the clubs involved to submit evidence to support their case against punishment, which could be as serious as expulsion from European competition.

A Uefa statement confirmed: “These clubs will need to submit additional monitoring information during October and November upon the deadlines set by the CFCB, subsequent to which an additional communication will be made and conservatory measures may be imposed.”

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were hit with heavy fines and a reduction of players in their Champions League squads for season 2014-15 as a result of previous breaches under the FFP guidelines, having failed to convince the CFCB that their overspends were circumstancial.

Uefa has also announced that five further clubs – Bursaspor, CFR Cluj, Astra Giurgiu, Buducnost Podgorica and Ekranas – will have prize money temporarily withheld while they are investigated for overdue payments to either employees or external parties.

It total, the organisation will continue to monitor 115 cases over which they have concerns regarding finances.

Coleman still a doubt for Liverpool clash – Martinez

The full-back has missed the last two games after suffering a head injury against Wolfsburg, and his manager is not confident of him featuring on Saturday

Everton full-back Seamus Coleman remains a major doubt for this weekend’s derby clash with Liverpool, according to Roberto Martinez.

The Republic of Ireland international has missed the club’s last two outings – a 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace and the 3-0 loss to Swansea City in the League Cup – after suffering a head injury against Wolfsburg a week ago.

The game is must-win for both sides following disappointing starts to the campaign, but Martinez is not willing to play Coleman unless he is 100 per cent fit.

“You don’t want to lose players full stop so then when you talk about Seamus Coleman who is such an influential player for us he could be a big miss,” Martinez said.

“But what I want is players on the pitch to be 100 per cent and to be able to push themselves and being able to perform and do well for the team.

“It’s unfair to put players in a situation where they cannot play at 100 per cent. We need to make sure they don’t miss any more time and that’s going to be the situation with Seamus.”

Martinez has also confirmed that Darron Gibson is now fully fit and available for selection after making his first start in 11 months on Tuesday night.

I went mad after my debut Liverpool goal, admits Rossiter

The 17-year-old became the second youngest scorer in the club’s history behind Michael Owen during Tuesday’s League Cup penalty shootout win over Middlesbrough

Jordan Rossiter admits he “went mad” after scoring a dream debut goal for Liverpool in their League Cup win over Middlesbrough.

Rossiter fired the ball under Jamal Blackman from 30 yards to put Liverpool ahead at Anfield and become the club’s second youngest scorer ever at just 17 years and 183 days old, behind only Michael Owen.

Brendan Rodgers’ side eventually overcame their spirited Championship opponents 14-13 in a marathon penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in normal time, and afterwards Rossiter reflected on his special moment.

“I couldn’t have dreamed of that. I can’t even remember what I did when I scored. I just went mad a bit,” he told Sky Sports.

“I am still young and looking to build on that performance. Hopefully I can do that in the future.”

Meanwhile a relieved Simon Mignolet – who scored his own spot-kick – admitted he had never witnessed anything like what became the longest shootout in League Cup history.

The Belgian added: “No, not [a penalty shootout] that long. I have obviously done a few in pre-season and I think the lads have practised them really well.

“You always want to progress. We have done that and that is the main thing. We wanted to finish it earlier but we got the result we wanted and that’s all that mattered.”
