Arsenal, Liverpool & Juventus wanted Falcao too, reveals father

The prolific attacker’s parent has claimed several European giants were pursuing his son, but that he’s delighted with the Manchester United move

Radamel Falcao’s father has revealed that Juventus, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City also attempted to sign the Manchester United striker this summer.

The Colombia international eventually left Monaco for United on deadline day of the summer transfer window, but Falcao’s father Radamel Garcia has claimed that Louis van Gaal’s side faced stiff competition from a number of European top teams.

“Juventus, Manchester City and Liverpool all wanted him as well, and even Arsenal made a late approach,” he told LA FM. “Fortunately, he has now joined Manchester United. They are a great team.”

The 28-year-old was also heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, but the Santiago Bernabeu side eventually opted against signing the prolific striker.

“Real Madrid? When you have money and go to the market to buy a shirt or pants, you have to decide whether you buy them now or not. Real Madrid eventually opted not to do so and there’s not much you can do about that.

“Plus I got the feeling that there were quite a few conditions if they wanted to sign him. We have to accept how things went.

“We are very grateful that Manchester United came along. United are England’s most important team and one of the strongest economic powers in football.”

Borini happy with Liverpool stay

Balotelli overlooked again as Quagliarella replaces Osvaldo in Italy squad

The Torino striker has received his first Azzurri call-up since November 2010 following the withdrawal of the Inter attacker, who has been sidelined with a hamstring problem

Mario Balotelli has once again been overlooked by Antonio Conte, with the new Italy coach having turned to Fabio Quagliarella to replace the injured Pablo Daniel Osvaldo in his squad for Thursday’s friendly against Netherlands and next week’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway.

Balotelli was surprisingly left out of the original 27-man panel when it was announced on Sunday but was in contention for a recall after it emerged that Osvaldo was struggling with a hamstring problem.

However, Conte has instead decided to turn to Torino striker Quagliarella, who was last called up by his country in November 2010.

Conte, of course, knows the 31-year-old well, having worked with the attacker for the duration of his three-year stint in charge of Juventus.

Quagliarella’s call-up represents the second injury-enforced change to the original squad, with versatile Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna having replaced Parma centre-half Gabriel Paletta, who pulled out with a back problem.

Italy host Netherlands in Bari on Thursday evening before travelling to Oslo to take on Euro 2016 qualification rivals Norway next Tuesday.
