Moreno could make Liverpool debut against Manchester City, reveals Rodgers

The Spaniard arrived at Anfield in a €15 million deal from Sevilla earlier this month and could feature on Monday against the Premier League champions

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hinted that new signing Alberto Moreno could come straight into his side at Manchester City.

The Reds travel to the Etihad Stadium on Monday for a Premier League blockbuster against the side they handed the title to last term.

Liverpool’s late-season collapse saw City win their second title in three seasons but Rodgers has wasted no time in bolstering his squad since the departure of star striker Luis Suarez.

Moreno – one of several new faces at Liverpool – signed from Sevilla for a reported €15 million earlier this month but was ineligible to play the club’s season-opener against Southampton last week.

But he has been given the all-clear to face City and Rodgers said if required, Moreno can slot in straight away.

“He has got huge potential,” Rodgers told Liverpool’s official website. “We needed a left-side player. We monitored him for a while and when we felt we got the value and the worth, we were able to clinch the deal.

“He’s a really exciting young player. When you watch him, he’s very attack-minded, very quick and he serves the ball really well.

“At 22, he’s hungry to succeed. He has got improvements to make but he’s one of the players we’ve brought in this summer who is ready to play straight away.

“We had a practice game here last week and he looked very good. He’s one who is coming straight out of La Liga. He’s come from the Europa League champions.

“He’s done great. Last season he was one of the top left-backs in Europe and was highly sought after.

“He’s a boy that will fit well into our way of working.”

Galliani: Balotelli exit in everyone’s best interests

The Italy international will complete a €20 million move to Anfield early next week and the Rossoneri vice-president feels it was the right time for the forward to move on

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani believes that Mario Balotelli’s imminent transfer to Liverpool is in everyone’s best interests.

The Rossoneri have agreed a €20 million fee with the Reds for the Italy international, who is expected to complete his proposed move to Anfield on Monday or Tuesday.

Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi has already stated that while the San Siro side are losing “a great player”, the sale of a player notorious for misbehaviour on and off the field will have a positive affect on “team spirit”.

Galliani has now conceded a matter of weeks after saying that Balotelli was “99 per cent certain” to be staying at Milan, that it was the right move for all three parties.

“It was a decision made in the interests of the player, Milan and Liverpool,” the Rossoneri vice-president told Milannews.

Milan are now being linked with a plethora of potential replacements, including Roma’s Mattia Destro and Porto’s Jackson Martinez, and while Galliani refused to be drawn on his transfer targets, he did admit that he has been talking strikers with Inzaghi on Sunday.

“A centre forward? Yes, it’s the priority,” he confessed. “We’re looking for a replacement for Balotelli.”

Milan kick off their Serie A campaign with a home game against Lazio on August 31.

AC Milan will gain ‘team spirit’ with Balotelli exit – Inzaghi

The striker is closing in on a €20 million move to Liverpool and the Rossoneri boss believes his side could benefit, despite the loss of a “great player”

AC Milan head coach Filippo Inzaghi believes his side will gain in “team spirit and hunger” with the sale of Mario Balotelli.

The 24-year-old is on the verge of completing a €20 million move to Liverpool, just over 18 months after returning to Serie A from Manchester City.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has already described the often-controversial forward as being worth the risk, but Inzaghi – though acknowledging him as a “great player” – feels his own squad will be the better for his departure.

Speaking to reporters at the Forte dei Marmi beach resort, he said: “When a player leaves, it means all the parties involved took the decision. We are certainly losing a great player, but we gain something more in team spirit and hunger.

“I wish Balo all the best at Liverpool.”

The likes of Jackson Martinez and Alvaro Negredo are among the players rumoured to be on Milan’s shortlist to replace Balotelli, but Inzaghi claims he is in no rush to secure a signing and suggested Jeremy Menez could be deployed as the focal point of attack.

“The directors know what I want in the market. I have to train the players at my disposal and we have a squad up to the task. If someone else arrives, even better, but otherwise we’re fine as we are,” he said.

“Jeremy Menez can play any of the three attacking roles and help us to use a different system. He is a versatile player who will be of great use.”
