Rodgers: Liverpool will bounce back from Manchester City loss

Despite impressing particularly in the first half, the Reds were beaten by goals from Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero on Monday, but their boss expects them to recover

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant that his side’s 3-1 loss at Manchester City will not prove a major “psychological blow”.

Despite controlling large periods of play in the first half at the Etihad Stadium on Monday, the Reds found themselves a goal down at the break as Stevan Jovetic opened his Premier League account for the season, with the Montenegrin and Sergio Aguero further punishing Rodgers’s men after the break.

A Pablo Zabaleta own goal, forced by Rickie Lambert’s close-range header that was initially brilliantly saved by Joe Hart, offered scant consolation for the visitors, but the Northern Irishman was keen to take the positives despite having lost to the side who pipped them to the title last season.

“I think, up until the 40th minute, we were the better team but we switched off in final period,” he told Sky Sports.

“We didn’t defend it well enough and were 1-0 down. At 2-0 it is difficult for us but, to our credit, we kept going.

“I felt we needed to be quicker in our actions in the final third, we needed to be more dynamic, but we looked a threat, which is important.

“This is a difficult place to come but we will continue to work, we’ll get better – it just wasn’t our night.

“There is no psychological blow; there is a long way to go. It was a tough game but we’ll move on.”

New signing Mario Balotelli, confirmed as a Red earlier on Monday, will soon be available after watching from the stands at the Etihad but Rodgers has fitness concerns over Glen Johnson and Alberto Moreno, both of whom picked up knocks late on.

“Glen pulled his thigh so we will assess that tomorrow,” he added. “Moreno twisted his ankle so we need to see how that is. There is swelling now but we’ll see how it is in the morning.”

Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool: Jovetic & Aguero see off Reds

The Montenegro international scored either side of half-time before the Argentine netted within 20 seconds of coming on as a substitute in a dominant peformance by the hosts

Premier League holders Manchester City continued a fine start to their title defence, with two goals from Stevan Jovetic setting them on their way to a 3-1 win over last year’s runners-up, Liverpool.

The Reds had the best of the first half but failed to make their dominance count and the Montenegrin punished them shortly before the break by stealing a march on both Dejan Lovren and debutant Alberto Moreno to score.

Jovetic then combined with Samir Nasri on 55 minutes to give Manuel Pellegrini’s side breathing room before Sergio Aguero struck immediately after coming on as a substitute.

Rickie Lambert looked to have bundled a header over the line for his first Liverpool goal towards the end but the last touch came off Pablo Zabaleta for an own goal, though City were nonetheless able to hold out for the win.

With new signing Mario Balotelli watching on after completing his move from AC Milan, Liverpool gave a debut to Moreno while Joe Allen returned for Lucas in midfield.

Zabaleta’s recall for City enabled Gael Clichy to revert to left-back and the 29-year-old was at the heart of the hosts’ good early play. Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure both had sights of goal in the opening 15 minutes thanks to Clichy crosses but neither was able to stretch Mignolet.

Liverpool’s midfield began to dominate possession following a cagey start and Daniel Sturridge finally tested Hart in the 33rd minute. Steven Gerrard executed a perfect pass to find the striker at the back post but, having escaped the attentions of Vincent Kompany, his fierce left-footed shot was pushed away.

Hart’s efforts proved crucial for City as they went on to open the scoring through Jovetic with four minutes of the half remaining. As Moreno dallied on a knockdown from Lovren inside the Liverpool penalty area, the 24-year-old nipped in and lashed the ball through the legs of Mignolet.

Rodgers’s side had the ball in the net four minutes after the break but the linesman’s flag denied Sturridge, much to the relief of Kompany, who had misjudged a Glen Johnson cross.

To rub salt into the Liverpool wounds, City promptly doubled their lead as Jovetic completed a neat one-two with Nasri with a calm finish. The striker’s flick ran perfectly into the Frenchman’s stride and Nasri returned the ball to his unmarked team-mate to apply the finish.

The introduction of debutant Lazar Markovic breathed some life back into Liverpool but a ruthless City outfit extended their lead even further in the 69th minute. Jesus Navas’s pass released Aguero in behind the Liverpool defence and the Argentine confidently fired low into the back of the net, just 23 seconds after replacing Dzeko.

Liverpool, who have now only won once in their last nine visits to City, grabbed a consolation with seven minutes to play as Zabaleta nudged the ball into his own goal. Sturridge showed good strength on the right and delivered a perfect cross to Lambert, whose header was saved by Hart before the loose ball struck the defender on the knee and dropped over the line.

There was further bad news for Liverpool as Johnson hobbled off after all three substitutions had been made, while Moreno appeared to turn his ankle in injury time but carried on.
