Rodgers: Southampton trio will settle quickly at Liverpool

The manager feels Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert are already used to their new club’s tactics thanks to Saints’ “offensive, aggressive” approach last season

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed his trio of signings from Southampton to settle quickly due to the similar styles of the teams.

Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert have all been signed for a combined fee of around €63 million as Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad in a bid to challenge for multiple trophies.

And Southampton’s “offensive, aggressive way” should mean the three signings make a swift adaptation to Liverpool’s similar style, according to their new manger.

“I think the advantage of taking them is that they understand how we work,” he told reporters as his side prepare to face Manchester United in the International Champions Cup final.

“All the players we have brought in were done so because of their profile. Southampton played in a really offensive, aggressive way and the players that have come in will adapt that little bit quicker to that.

“There are obviously pressures. If you’re playing for Liverpool, there’s a different adaptation altogether, but in terms of the football style, that will make it easier.

“I think if you have three players coming in from the same club, of course it always helps on that first day walking into the changing room.

“Ultimately they’ll gain respect because they’re good players, and that’s why they’re at Liverpool. Hopefully they can show that over their career here.”

Manchester United seeking revenge against Liverpool – Fletcher

After finishing behind their rivals for the first time in 12 years last term, the Red Devils are keen to start righting those wrongs in the International Champions Cup final

Manchester United are out for revenge against Liverpool in the International Champions Cup final, says Darren Fletcher.

Brendan Rodgers’s side exceeded expectations last season by narrowly missing out on the Premier League title as United finished seventh under David Moyes – their worst league showing since 1989-90.

Liverpool also claimed the league double over their rivals – with a 1-0 win at Anfield and a 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford and Fletcher is keen to go some way to right those wrongs in Miami on Monday.

“It’s Manchester United v Liverpool,” he told reporters. “I know it’s only pre-season and it’s just a summer competition, but when United play Liverpool, it’s always a big deal.

“We want to win every match, and it’s no different when we play Liverpool. We have just beaten Real Madrid, the European champions, and we now want to go on and beat Liverpool.

“That is the sort of thing that gives the squad confidence. We have a lot of young players out here and you have to remember that. But all of us have to do it as a team, collectively, and we are doing that.”

United are without European football this season for the first time in 25 years and Fletcher feels the less-congested fixture list can aid the squad’s title bid in the same way Liverpool benefited in 2013-14.

“We go out to win the league,” he continued. “It is a dangerous mindset to have, to target fourth place. We are not players or a club that thinks like that and we will be going out to win the league.

“Liverpool didn’t have European football last year and they went close to winning the league, so hopefully we can go one better next year.”

Rodgers keen to claim bragging rights over Manchester United

With Liverpool set to face their rivals in the final of the International Champions Cup, the manager insists the match is more than just a pre-season friendly ahead of the new term

Brendan Rodgers has emphasised the importance of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United despite the game being a pre-season friendly.

The two rival clubs are set to contest the International Champions Cup final in Miami on Monday – the pair’s final fixture in the United States.

While building fitness is paramount, Rodgers and his men are determined to claim early bragging rights ahead of the Premier League season, which kicks off on August 16.

“Liverpool against Manchester United is about more than football, it’s about two cities which aren’t far apart, and who have historically always been rivals,” Rodgers told reporters.

“It is arguably the biggest game in the world and for it to be here in the US, it’s great viewing for them and magnificent news for the organisers.

“The most important thing is obviously about getting the players fit for the start of the season, but even winning in pre-season creates that belief and mentality, and so it’s very important.”

Liverpool exceeded expectations last season as they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, finishing second to champions Manchester City.

It was a far cry from United’s campaign after the club faltered dramatically under manager David Moyes to place seventh in the standings and lost both league games to Liverpool.
