Liverpool – Tottenham Hotspur Betting Preview: The Reds to take advantage of slack Spurs defence

After seven straight wins in the league, Brendan Rodgers’ men have a real chance of lifting the title and Hugh Wilson is backing goals when Spurs visit Anfield

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur meet at Anfield on Sunday, with both sides desperately needing the three points but for different reasons. While the Reds are fighting it out with Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, Spurs are still chasing down that final Champions League place, which their rivals Arsenal still hold.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have been superb in recent weeks, but had to dig deep midweek against Sunderland, winning the game 2-1.

With the Black Cats heaping huge amounts of pressure on Liverpool late on, the Reds had to win ugly, something they haven’t needed to do for a while, especially in front of the Anfield faithful.

Rodgers’ side are currently unbeaten in their last 12 league games, winning a remarkable 10 of those matches. bet365 price them at 4/9 (1.44) to win again.

Spurs recorded a much needed victory at the weekend, coming from two goals down to beat Southampton 3-2.

A last minute goal gave Tottenham all three points, which saw them bounce back from four games without a win which will be a huge relief to Tim Sherwood.

Despite trailing Arsenal by seven points coming into the weekend, Tottenham still have a chance to nick the fourth spot in the league, but realistically will need to take maximum points against Liverpool. bet365 price them at 11/2 (6.50) to do so, with the same firm pricing the draw at 7/2 (4.50).

Liverpool’s matches have been filled with goals in recent weeks, with the over 2.5 goals bet paying out in their last seven league games. With the bet also landing in four of Spurs last five, you can expect plenty again. However, with the over 2.5 goals bet priced at 4/9 (1.44), this price is too short to touch.

What does stand out is Liverpool to score over 2.5 goals themselves at 6/5 (2.20) . Despite not landing midweek against Sunderland, the Reds have been scoring for fun, netting at least three times in their six games before Wednesday night.

With Spurs conceding 12 goals in their last five matches, they have struggled to keep goals out and with Liverpool’s attacking line up looking particularly frightening of late, it’s tough to see them restricting the likes of Suarez and Sturridge as the Reds look to continue their title challenge.

This is a bet that has landed an amazing 17 times in Liverpool’s Premier League games in the current campaign so looks worth chancing against a Spurs side struggling defensively at 6/5 (2.20).

Pellegrini backing Yaya Toure to beat Suarez to Player of the Year Award

The Chilean says the Ivory Coast international is now one of the best players in the world and is hoping he can maintain his fine form until the end of the season

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is backing Yaya Toure to beat Luis Suarez to the Player of the Year Award.

The Ivory Coast international has been a driving force behind City’s title challenge this season and is also the club’s leading Premier League scorer with 17 goals.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez currently leads the scoring charts, with 28 goals, despite missing the first five games of the season due to suspension.

However, Pellegrini thinks Toure deserves the award and is hoping he can maintain his fine form until the end of the season.

“I think Yaya has had a very good season so far and we hope he can continue,” he told reporters.

“Hopefully we win the title and then he can be the best player.”

While Pellegrini refused to compare the two players, he did insist that Toure is now of the best in the world.

“I don’t want to compare him with anyone – both Yaya and Suárez have had amazing seasons so far.

“They must try to finish the season in the same way and after that, it [Footballer of Year award] will be the same as the fight for the title.

“But Yaya is one of the best midfielders in the world and it doesn’t matter if he’s European, African or South American.

“He has a chance to be there with the best players in the world.”

Liverpool – Tottenham Preview: In-form Reds aiming for eighth consecutive Premier League win

Liverpool head to Tottenham on Sunday with Brendan Rodgers insisting the pressure is not getting to his side as they continue to fight Chelsea and Manchester City for the title.

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood has questioned whether the Reds have the belief to win the title for the first time since 1990 but Rodgers is remaining calm.

He told reporters: “In terms of management this will have been my fifth season but I’ve been stood on the touchline for 20-odd years and this year I have been able to put into practise what I have been working on for many years.

“Although there is still a lot for me to learn, it is not as if I am new to it.

“Other squads have much greater depth and maybe better individuals than us but we are showing we are developing and we are looking to put something in place not just for one season.

“If there is any pressure it is on other teams.”

A 2-1 victory over Sunderland on Wednesday stretched Liverpool’s winning run to seven Premier League matches, and they begin the weekend just a point behind leaders Chelsea with seven games remaining.

Suarez scored twice when Rodgers’ side ran riot at White Hart Lane, winning 5-0, back in December, while Sturridge’s goal on Wednesday ensured the duo became the first Liverpool strike pairing to each score 20 goals in a season since Ian St John and Roger Hunt 50 years ago.

Liverpool’s thrashing of Spurs cost Andre Villas-Boas his job – and Sherwood can ill-afford a repeat on Sunday.

Sherwood was charged with the task of replacing Villas-Boas after the Portuguese was shown the door but he has come under pressure after his side crashed out of the Europa League to Benfica while also producing inconsistent Premier League form that looks set to extend their wait for a return to the Champions League by at least another 12 months.

A spirited fightback against Southampton last weekend raised morale, as Tottenham came back from 2-0 down to secure a thrilling 3-2 win courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stoppage-time strike.

That victory went some way to easing the pressure on Sherwood, who has had to fend off questions about his future amid reports linking the likes of Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal with the White Hart Lane hotseat.

Tottenham have lost their last two top-flight games on the road without scoring a goal and really need to put that right this weekend if they are to have any hope of making up the seven-point gap on fourth-placed Arsenal.

The visitors again have a doubt over striker Emmanuel Adebayor (heel), with Kyle Walker (pelvis) and Erik Lamela (back) remaining sidelined, but Mousa Dembele (knock) Vlad Chiriches (back) and Michael Dawson (hamstring) could return.

Jose Enrique (knee) is Liverpool’s only absentee, but captain Steven Gerrard remains one yellow card away from a two-match ban.
