Konoplyanka admits to ‘resentment’ over failed Liverpool move

The Ukraine international is looking to the future despite his failed Anfield move but Dnipro director Andriy Rusol claims he is “1000 per cent sure” of a summer switch

Dnipro forward Yevhen Konoplyanka has admitted that he feels “a little resentment” over his failed move to Liverpool, but is focused on facing Tottenham in the Europa League.

The Reds missed out on signing the Ukraine international despite trying to push through a deal in the final days of the transfer window, with prolonged negotiations continuing throughout deadline day on Friday.

But when asked if he was upset at the move breaking down, Konoplyanka told reporters: “Not at all upset! Well, I will not hide it… there is a little resentment.

But life goes on. I need to treat this like a sleep. I woke up and carried on. I will search for the next dream. I hope that everything will turn out okay.”

Konoplyanka also stressed the disappointment over the collapsed move would not affect his performances.

“On the contrary!” he said. “We’ll play Tottenham [in the Europa League], one of the best teams in the English Premier League. We will go for it! I want to show my best.”

There have been reports that Liverpool will revive their interest in the summer, but Konoplyanka insists his he would already be playing for one of La Liga’s top sides if his future depended entirely on him.

If I decided, I would already be playing at Barcelona or Real Madrid, winning the Champions League. These things do not depend on me,” he added.

According to Dnipro executive director Andriy Rusol, however, Konoplyanka will move to Anfield this summer.

“I am a thousand per cent sure that Liverpool will try again in the summer and then we’ll let him go,” Rusol is quoted as saying in various Ukrainian media outlets.

“Money was not the problem, the problem was that Liverpool came too late.

“But in the summer everything will be fine. If Liverpool, in the summer, report to us, Yevhen will still go to this club.”

Rumours quickly circulated that Dnipro president Igor Kolomoisky caused the deal to breakdown by refusing to sign the relevent paperwork, but Rusol has placed the blame at Liverpool’s door.

“Igor Kolomoisky gave the go-ahead immediately,” he added. “It is not our fault, Liverpool representatives could have arrived a day or two earlier.

“The president could not keep the midfielder, because the contract spelled out the specific release clause. The British club just did not have time to finish the deal. Our club could not sign the transfer documents until we received the money in the account.

“Up to the deadline we were waiting for the transfer of money from Liverpool. But this did not happen.”

Mignolet: Training with Suarez & Sturridge has improved me

The 25-year-old goalkeeper feels going up against the Premier League’s most prolific strike partnership on a daily basis is aiding his development at Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says training with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge is improving him as a goalkeeper.

The Belgium international moved to Anfield from Sunderland ahead of the 2013-14 campaign, and has kept seven clean sheets in 24 Premier League appearances so far this term.

And Mignolet believes that going up against Suarez and Sturridge – who are the top-flight’s most prolific strike pairing with 37 league goals between them this season – is helping his development.

“It’s nice to play against them day in, day out on the training pitch because they make me better as a goalkeeper,” he told reporters.

“As a goalkeeper, I see it every day and I know what they can do to the opposition. If you go one v one against either of them, then as a goalkeeper you learn lots of things from them.

“I also know what other goalkeepers are in for and the quality Daniel and Luis have, and together it is unbelievable.”

Mignolet went on to say that the life of a keeper can sometimes be tough, although he believes this is merely an occupational hazard.

“Not all things always go your way and you have to accept that,” he added. “That’s what you are going to get as a footballer. I just try to do the things I’m asked to do.

“I just try to stay as focused as I always am, relax and make sure I can help the team out whenever I can.”

Seydou Keita reveals ‘advanced’ Liverpool talks

The 34-year-old says he could not reject a return to La Liga once Valencia made their interest known, adding to a growing list of January transfer frustrations for Brendan Rodgers

New Valencia midfielder Seydou Keita has revealed he was in “advanced talks” to join Liverpool during the January transfer window.

The Mail international’s decision highlights another setback for Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who admitted his frustrations after losing out on the signature of Basel winger Mohamed Salah to Chelsea, and then saw efforts to secure a deal for Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka fail on deadline day.

Keita arrived at los Che on a free transfer after an 18-month spell with Chinese outfit Dalian Aerbin and admitted that he jumped at the chance to move to Mestalla despite the Reds’ keen interest.

“When my agent told me that Valencia called to sign me, I didn’t hesitate for even a second,” he told reporters.

“I had very advanced talks with Liverpool, but I wanted to come here and I made that known to my agent.

“When I have come to play at Mestalle with Sevilla or Barcelona I worked very hard to win, because it’s a very big club with very good fans and which plays football that I like.”

Keita won 15 trophies during a four-year spell in Spain, with Sevilla and Barcelona, and has joined Valencia until the end of the season.
