Fulham-Liverpool game to go ahead as London Underground strike is suspended

A 48-hour walk-out in the capital’s transport system looked to affect people reaching Craven Cottage, but the service will now run as normal after an agreement was reached

Fulham’s Premier League match against Liverpool will go ahead following news that the proposed London Underground strike has been suspended.

Workers affiliated to the RMT and TSSA unions had planned a 48-hour walk-out for 22:00 CET on Tuesday, throwing some midweek games in the capital into doubt.

Fulham then revealed that Wednesday’s fixture against the Merseyside club could be called off amid doubts over the ability of their safety staff to get to Craven Cottage, with a further announcement set to be made on Tuesday.

However, before the club had a chance to make that announcement, the unions reached an agreement with London Underground, meaning all Tube services will run as normal.

Arsenal’s match against Manchester United would also have been affected, though the Emirates Stadium outfit never indicated any plans to postpone that game.

Basement club Fulham will be hoping to get their own campaign back on track with three points against Liverpool.

Liverpool boss Rodgers talks up ‘critical’ Fulham clash

The Cottagers claimed a hard-fought point against Manchester United on Sunday, despite being put under enormous pressure, and the Merseysiders have been urged against complacency

Brendan Rodgers has warned his Liverpool players not to underestimate bottom side Fulham on Wednesday after their Old Trafford heroics.

Despite propping up the rest of the Premier League and suffering FA Cup humiliation against League One Sheffield United last Tuesday, the Cottagers took the lead at Manchester United on Sunday and then equalised in the 94th minute through Darren Bent to earn a shock 2-2 draw.

Liverpool head to London fresh from hammering Arsenal 5-1 at the weekend, having also thumped Fulham 4-0 at Anfield back in November, but Rodgers has the utmost respect for Rene Meulensteen’s men and is anticipating a tough encounter.

“Every game is critical for us, whether it’s the top team or the bottom team,” the Reds boss told reporters.

“I think you saw (on Sunday) they’ve got some very good players. They showed great resilience in the game, they took the lead.

“I know some of the players there – brilliant professionals, Steve Sidwell, I’ve worked with, Scott Parker, Damien Duff, all players that are outstanding players with good experience.

“But we understand that it won’t be an easy game, because there are no easy games and obviously away from home in the Premier League it is difficult, but we have a belief and a confidence in our play and hopefully we can take that into Wednesday’s game and get another good three points.”

Fulham – Liverpool Preview: In-form Reds aiming to further title push

Fulham will hope for more Premier League heroics when they host Champions League-chasing Liverpool at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

Rene Meulensteen came away from former club Manchester United with an unlikely point on Sunday after a thrilling encounter at Old Trafford, as Darren Bent secured a 2-2 draw in the 94th minute.

While they may have travelled to face a United side low on confidence, Liverpool will be flying high after their own weekend exploits.

Four goals in the opening 20 minutes helped them to a 5-1 crushing of table-toppers Arsenal at Anfield, knocking the London club off the summit and boosting Liverpool’s European and title-winning hopes.

Liverpool have won their last three meetings with Fulham, scoring 11 goals in the process, and dominate the head-to-head record between the clubs in the Premier League with 15 wins from 25 fixtures.

However striker Bent believes the point at the champions proves they can mix it with the league’s top sides and hopes to take momentum into their midweek game.

“Our performances over recent weeks have not been as good as we would have liked,” he told the club’s official website. “But we’ve shown signs in those games that we are playing some good stuff.

“This is hopefully massive for us and hopefully we can kick on now and get some points on the board.

“A lot of people probably wrote us off and said we would get beat by three or four, but we showed we are a strong side and we can live with the best of them and we can kick on.”

Despite Sunday’s morale-boosting draw, Fulham come into the game in woeful form – without a league win since New Year’s Day – and they also have the division’s worst defensive record by a distance, having conceded 55 goals in 25 matches.

And that may well excite Liverpool, as only Manchester City have scored more than Brendan Rodgers’ men this term – with star strikers Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez particularly enjoying recent meetings Fulham.

Suarez has four goals in as many outings against the men from west London, while Sturridge netted a hat-trick to secure a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage last season.

Meulensteen will have a full complement to choose from, though Kostas Mitroglou’s fitness is still being carefully monitored as he awaits his Fulham debut.

The Dutchman made a number of surprise changes to his side at Old Trafford, though the likes of Muamer Tankovic, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Dan Burn all impressed in the draw.

Daniel Agger is closing on a Liverpool return, and is set to step up his recovery from a calf injury this week, though Wednesday will come too soon for him.

Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) and Glen Johnson (various injuries) both also remain sidelined for the Merseysiders, as do Lucas Leiva and Jose Enrique (both knee).
