Liverpool will keep pushing, says Rodgers after dramatic Fulham win

The Reds boss says his side harbours hope of catching the Premier League leaders after twice coming from behind to beat the Cottagers via an injury-time Steven Gerrard penalty

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says his side will continue to push for the Premier League title after they twice came back from losing positions to beat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

The visitors went behind after an own goal from Kolo Toure and Rodgers called for his players to iron out individual mistakes in the remaining matches.

“We conceded two goals, that has been unlike us for a while. We need to eradicate the individual errors. Thankfully we have goals in the team,” he told reporters.

Steven Gerrard clinched the three points for the Reds by converting an injury-time penalty and recieved special praise from his manager.

He continued: “Steven Gerrard is peerless in situations like that. He showed brilliant composure. It was a great result. We’ve had to show character to come form behind twice. A brilliant victory.”

When asked about Liverpool’s title aspirations, the northern Irishman remained coy and replied playing down his side’s chances.

He added: “We’re going to keep pushing. We’ve shown enough times we’re a very good side. We’re chasing, other teams are still ahead of us. We need some of them to drop points. We know we still have Man City and Chelsea to play at home. We’ll take it game by game. I’m enjoying as a coach watching the team improve.”

The Reds boss also reserved some praise for Fulham who were twice ahead in a rollercoaster of a match.

“It’s a great credit to Rene and his staff and players that we were given a very tough game. In the first half we were not quite on it in terms of intensity, and a mistake has put us 1-0 down,” he said.

“We then got a good goal, thanks to Gerrard’s marvellous pass. We raised the intensity and aggression at half-time. We’re disappointed with the second goal we gave away. This team has shown great characteristics mentally.”

Fulham 2-3 Liverpool: Gerrard seals Reds’ comeback with late penalty

Steven Gerrard’s stoppage-time penalty secured a huge victory for Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification, as they came from behind to beat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

The home side raced into an early lead as Kieran Richardson, bursting down the flank and hitting the byline, sent in a dangerous low cross that was sliced into the back of his own net by Kolo Toure.

Brendan Rodgers’ men pressed for an equaliser, though, and clinched it with half-time closing in as Daniel Sturridge latched onto Steven Gerrard’s through-ball and calmly struck the ball into the bottom corner.

Luis Suarez looked most likely to claim the next goal, twice sending placed shots inches wide of either post, before whacking the woodwork with a powerful effort, but it was Fulham who struck again.

With the Reds’ backline failing clear a hopeful cross into the area, Richardson made the most of the confusion to dart into the six-yard box and poke the ball beneath Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool, unperturbed, continued to press forward and duly levelled the scores a second time as Coutinho found space on the edge of the box before curling the ball into the far corner.

With time running out, Sascha Riether felled Sturridge inside the box and, after the referee pointed to the spot, Gerrard duly stepped up to power the ball into the back of the net and cement the Reds’ top-four credentials as they chase down the top three.

I nearly quit Liverpool – Skrtel

The Slovakian defender feared that he would have to leave Anfield in the summer but has won back his place in style and is delighted to have stayed with Brendan Rodgers’s side

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel says that he nearly called time on his Anfield career at the end of last season but is delighted that he had a change of heart.

The centre-back was not a regular fixture in the starting line-up in Brendan Rodgers’s first season at the helm and feared that he may have to leave in search of first-team football.

However, Rodgers hailed the former Zenit St Petersburg man as one of the best defenders in the Premier League after he scored twice in Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal and the 29-year-old is relieved that he decided to prolong his stay on Merseyside.

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about leaving,” Skrtel told the Liverpool Echo.

“It wasn’t easy for me after last season. I was on the bench in the second part of the season and that was something new for me.

“But it is not easy to leave a club like Liverpool because they are still one of the best clubs in the world. After six years here it was not easy to say: ‘Okay, I’m leaving.’

“Before this season started I just said to myself: ‘I will fight and work very hard to try to show people I am able to play and start the games.’

“I tried to work very hard in training every day and, when I got a chance to play, I tried to do my best to help the team.

“After games like Saturday’s I am just so glad and so happy that I stayed. Liverpool are a massive club and I just wanted to prove to people I am able to play for this club.”
