FA Cup quarter-final draw: Arsenal or Liverpool to face Everton

The Toffees will face either a Merseyside derby or a trip to north London in the next round, while Manchester City’s quadruple hunt sees them drawn against holders Wigan

Roberto Martinez will need to traverse an away trip to either Arsenal or Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals if he is to win the competition for a second consecutive season.

Everton, who beat Swansea City 3-1 at Goodison Park on Sunday to book their place in the sixth round, claimed a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season, but were hammered 4-0 by their Merseyside rivals at Anfield.

Elsewhere, Gus Poyet could be set for quick return to the Amex Stadium and former employers Brighton, with Sunderland drawn against either the Seagulls or Steve Bruce’s Hull City.

Quadruple-chasing Manchester City, meanwhile, will face reigning FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic at the Etihad Stadium, with Manuel Pellegrini’s men having defeated Chelsea 2-0 en route to the quarters.

Hodgson hails Sterling ‘re-emergence’ ahead of World Cup

The winger has just one cap for his country, but a return to form for Liverpool has seen his chances of inclusion in the England squad heightened

England manager Roy Hodgson has hailed the “re-emergence” of Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling ahead of the World Cup.

The 19-year-old has started the Reds’ last 14 Premier League fixtures and recently scored twice in a 5-1 win over title rivals Arsenal.

Sterling has just one cap to his name, coming in November 2012, but Hodgson has hinted that the winger is in his plans ahead of the summer trip to Brazil.

“Sterling emerging and doing as well as he is in a top team just puts a lot of pressure on everybody else, because if you can do it at the top of the table with Liverpool then you can do it in an England shirt,” he told reporters.

“It’s a re-emergence for him in a way. We gave him his debut against Sweden, when we opened the stadium in Stockholm, and he had burst into the Liverpool team and was doing fantastically well. Then he lost his place and almost disappeared. He wasn’t on the radar to such an extent.

“Then I remember having that U21 game against Scotland last summer and being very impressed with him, but at a time when he still hadn’t really burst back into the Liverpool team.

“But now, since he’s back in the Liverpool team, his form seems to be going up and up and up. And it means we do have competition in wide areas, on the right and left.”

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers has praised the form of another of Liverpool’s youngsters, calling Philippe Coutinho’s €10 million move to Anfield “a snip”.

“Philippe has been a snip. He’s an absolutely wonderful talent,” Rodgers told reporters.

“There are very few players at this level now who can penetrate with a pass and play through teams like he does. The quality and weight of his passes is sensational.

“When I worked at Chelsea I used to watch Deco. He was a bit older than Coutinho is, but I still remember his first training session when he got a round of applause.

“Coutinho is like that. He has pure quality and can make the difference in games.”

Cissokho defends under-fire Toure

The defender scored an own goal in the Reds’ 3-2 win at Fulham and was at fault for the goal conceded in a 1-1 draw at West Brom, leaving his team-mate to stand up for him

Aly Cissokho has leapt to the defence of under-fire Liverpool team-mate Kolo Toure after a couple of costly errors.

Toure was at fault for West Brom’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns earlier this month, and the centre-half scored a comical own goal to leave his side trailing after eight minutes at rock-bottom Fulham on Wednesday.

Liverpool recovered from that early setback but Toure’s displays have attracted criticism as Brendan Rodgers’ side try to keep pace in the Premier League title race.

Frenchman Cissokho, however, has no doubt as to Toure’s ability and he hailed the 32-year-old’s impact on his own development, particularly as the former Manchester City man can speak French.

“Kolo has been a big influence on me,” the left-back said in quotes reported by The Independent.

“He has marked my card on many occasions. For example, he told me what to expect when we went to play Stoke at the Britannia. He explained to me it would be windy, the ball would be in the air all the time and I’d be up against big, strong lads.

“There are a lot of youngsters in the squad and people like Kolo and Steven Gerrard are very important, especially in the middle of a match. They are a voice out on the park, telling us to slow things down or play a longer game.

“Simon Mignolet also speaks French and that’s important for me because I’ve got Kolo alongside me and Mignolet in goal behind me.

“Sometimes, you do have to react quickly and then your first thoughts will be in French and it helps if you can shout it out to someone near you.”

Liverpool travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday, with both clubs also harbouring ambitions of a title push, and Cissokho is expecting a tough test despite having hammered Arsene Wenger’s men 5-1 last weekend.

“Their run of form isn’t that impressive but Arsene Wenger is very experienced at handling these big games,” he added.

“We have to make sure we profit from their slight drop in form and not allow them to develop their game, not allow them to pass the ball or feel comfortable.”
