Sturridge plays down foot injury ahead of Germany clash

The Liverpool striker insists the pain “is not too bad” and that he is “raring to go” ahead of the visit of Joachim Low’s side to Wembley

Daniel Sturridge has played down the severity of his foot injury ahead of England’s friendly against Germany on Tuesday.

The striker picked up the knock during Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Fulham last week and was not risked for Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Chile at Wembley.

However, the 24-year-old has now declared himself fit and available for selection.

“I am raring to go, the pain is not too bad,” Sturridge told reporters on Sunday. “It’s not a serious injury – the pain’s not too bad.

“Every game we play in is important for us, it’ll be a tense game, I’m looking forward to it.”

Sturridge, who has scored 11 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season, went on to say he hopes to avoid injury for the rest of the campaign and earn himself a place in Hodgson’s squad for next year’s World Cup.

“There are two games before the selection [for the World Cup], so it is important everyone stakes their claim, and when an opportunity comes, you take it,” he added.

“I’m just working hard, I’m not put pressure on myself, the manager is there to make the decision, I will just work hard and train hard and hope I’m in the team.

“If I can remain fit I’m sure the opportunity will be there and I’ll be able to take them. I’m not worrying about anything other than playing football.”

Cissokho wants Liverpool stay

The former Olympique Lyonnais defender admits he wants to remain on Merseyside for the foreseeable future and hopes he can help the club return to the Champions League

Aly Cissokho has admitted that he would love to make his move Liverpool permanent at the end of the current campaign.

The France international signed for Brendan Rodgers’ side on a season-long loan from Valencia in August and has made six appearances in all competitions, including starting the last four Premier League games in the absence of regular left-back Jose Enrique.

Liverpool sit second in the top flight after 11 games, having lost just twice so far, and Cissokho is enjoying every minute of life at Anfield.

“It’s a great source of pride for me every day to be able to play with players like this and to represent a big club like Liverpool,” the 26-year-old told the club’s official website.

“It’s a source of pride for all the coaches I had as a youth player. Of course, I am very happy to be here and I hope to stay here.

“Everyone in the team is disappointed not to be competing in European competition, and every player wants to give his best to ensure that the club is up there in the qualifying positions at the end of the season.

“The season is long, and there are a lot of matches to come.

“The coach makes, and will continue to make, his decisions, and it’s important to respect them so that the team can be in the best shape each Saturday.”

Cissokho only joined Valencia from Olympique Lyonnais during the summer of 2012.

Allen eager to make his mark at Liverpool

The Welsh midfielder has endured a “frustrating” period on the sidelines with a hamstring injury but intends to win back his place in the starting XI after returning to action

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen is eager to impress after a frustrating period watching on from the sidelines.

The Welshman recently returned to first-team contention at Anfield, having spent two months out with a hamstring injury, but still faces a battle to gain a regular starting berth, with Brendan Rodgers’s side having impressed in his absence.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t frustrating at times,” Allen told the press.

“I’m working hard and waiting patiently for my chance but Liverpool is a massive club and we are having a great season.

“The competition for places is really good and you want that at a top club and I have to work as hard as I can to get back into the fold.

“You want to see your team doing well, especially when you are out injured – the lift you get is from seeing your team doing well.

“Hopefully with the momentum we are gaining now we can keep going and in an ideal world I would like to be a big part of that.”
