Giroud welcomes potential Suarez competition at Arsenal

The striker feels that the possible acquisition of his positional rival would show critics that the Gunners are serious about winning silverware and aims to improve his own form

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has backed the club’s move for Liverpool’s wantaway forward Luis Suarez, despite the threat that the Uruguayan would pose to his first-team spot.

As revealed by Goal on Wednesday, Suarez is ready to submit a formal transfer request to force an Anfield departure after the Gunners lodged a £42 million bid for his services.

Giroud is not worried about the increased competition that Suarez’s arrival would generate, however, as he believes that the acquisition of the 26-year-old would finally prove that the club means business in the transfer market.

“I think we need maybe two or three more players. Yes, that’s what we need – to show ambition,” the Frenchman told reporters. “The club has to show the fans that we want it. Me and my team-mates, we need it as well. It’s all about the team. It will be a really positive thing if we have a new striker.

“I am not worried but I will wait until September so we know the team, the players. I never used to read the newspapers and I don’t want to change my way of life but I have heard a lot of things and I know we need a striker.

“The most important thing is the team. We are waiting for one but we don’t know. I think it will be good for the team and for me as well to have another striker, to have more competition between us.

“But I think I could play with [Suarez] or without him. So I will be able to be in the first XI this season. I really want to be in the first XI this season but we will see.”

Giroud will also be hoping to seal a spot in France’s World Cup 2014 squad on top of becoming an Arsenal regular this term, with the striker eyeing a more consistent season in terms of form and appearances.

“I really want to have a good pre-season in preparation for a big season,” he added. “I think it’s important to look forward to the World Cup because I want to play in the tournament with France.

“I know I have to be really efficient with my club, Arsenal, and I want to be the first striker of this team so I need to score early.

“Because I’m settled I will be much better this season. I feel good. I have had a period of adaptation in the Premier League. A lot of strikers needed time to settle in the team and in the Premier League.

“I need to have a good integration when I arrived and that’s what happened at Arsenal. I feel good and I really want to play the maximum number of games to help the team to win as many games as possible.”

‘Why would you swap Liverpool for Arsenal?’ – Rodgers warns Suarez against Anfield exit

The Reds manager believes that a move to the Emirates Stadium “does not add up” for the striker and feels that the Uruguayan would only continue to shine under his guidance

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that wantaway striker Luis Suarez would be making a mistake by joining Arsenal.

The Gunners lodged a £42 million bid for the Uruguyan on Monday and Goal understands that the 26-year-old is preparing to hand in a transfer request to force an exit from Anfield.

But Rodgers feels that Liverpool’s superior stature in the game would mean that a move to the Emirates Stadium is illogical, especially after Suarez received a standing ovation from a sold-out 95,000-capacity MCG on Wednesday.

“Would it be a mistake for Luis to leave Liverpool? Yes, 100 per cent,” the Reds boss told reporters. “I know what we are trying to build and grow here, so why would you swap Liverpool to go to Arsenal? I am not sure that it adds up, to be honest.

“Don’t get me wrong, Arsenal has a wonderful history in its own right but Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I am sure Luis will have seen the sheer size and status of the club here [in Melbourne], so we’ll just see how it goes.”

Rodgers, however, notes that the lure of the Champions League could play a part in Suarez’s desire to leave Liverpool – with the club absent from Europe’s elite competition since 2009-10.

But the manager is keen for the club to grow with the striker and feels that his guidance can see the Uruguayan continue his prolific form from last season at Anfield.

“We are not in the Champions League and haven’t been for a while now but we have to step up to the challenge,” he continued, “and we would love to have [Suarez] to continue with the next phase.

“It is something to be given a team that is built around you. I made some big calls last year to make it work to suit his strengths and it is no coincidence he had a great season apart from the end bit.

“It is difficult for Luis, I understand that. If a team wants you, it can be difficult but it is a situation we are in control of because he has three years left on his contract. Unless something changes, or there is an offer which is heavily increased, he is still very much a Liverpool player.

“And I can categorically say that the owners have been brilliant throughout this process. The board and club has stayed very strong. It is very simple. We don’t want to sell one of our best players.”

Meanwhile, Glen Johnson echoed Rodgers’s sentiments and feels that the club are moving in the right direction under the Ulsterman.

“You wouldn’t walk away from this club easily,” the full-back remarked. “We are building under Brendan. With the owners that we have now, you can see the foundations are there and everything is going the right way.

“If we can keep the players that we have got here, then everything looks promising. The members of staff, the players – we are all the same. We want to keep him here.”

‘Suarez lacks Liverpool loyalty’

Ex-Anfield player John Aldridge believes the Uruguayan is insulting the club considering how they have stuck by him through numerous controversies

Luis Suarez has disrespected Liverpool by pushing to leave the club, according to former Anfield favourite John Aldridge.

Arsenal have made multiple bids while the striker has handed in a transfer request to secure an exit as Real Madrid continue to lurk – with the Reds standing firm over keeping the Uruguayan.

And although Suarez has been a regular scorer of goals – he notched 30 in 44 appearances last term – Aldridge, who scored 64 goals in 106 appearances for Liverpool, feels Suarez owes the club after their loyalty through a number of high-profile controversies.

“There’s a massive lack of loyalty there and especially the way Liverpool have stuck by Luis,” Aldridge told BBC Radio 5 Live when asked about Suarez’s desire to leave.

“Not everything’s all about money. It’s different with Luis Suarez because of the positions he’s put Liverpool in over the last couple of years and they’ve stuck by him.

“The fans have been loyal, the manager’s been loyal, his comrades have been loyal and the hierarchy have been loyal to him.

“They’ve done everything in the powers possible to back him up and he’s basically put a custard pie in everyone’s face.”
