Swansea chairman Jenkins confirms interest in Shelvey

The Capital One Cup winners are keeping tabs on the England Under-21 international, while they remain hopeful of striking a deal for forwards Bafetimbi Gomis and Wilfried Bony

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has confimed the club’s interest in signing Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Michael Laudrup is looking to strengthen his squad further having already brought in Jose Canas and Jordi Amat from Real Betis and Espanyol respectively, and secured the loan signing of Jonathan De Guzman.

Reds midfielder Shelvey has emerged as the Swans’ latest target with the 21-year-old thought to be valued at around 6 million, and Jenkins has admitted the club have scouted the former Charlton player.

Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post: “He is a young player we went to watch last year, but it hasn’t gone any further than that.”

Wilfried Bony and Bafetimbi Gomis are two other transfer targets Swansea have set their sights on, and Jenkins insists negotiations are ongoing and remains hopeful the signings will happen.

“We are still talking on a number of fronts to try to get the right players on the right deals for Swansea City,” he continued.

“There have been continual conversations on Bafetimbi Gomis because he has been one of our main targets.

“The fact is that there are quite a lot of things which need to be sorted out at Lyon’s end which are out of our control.

“We have kept the door open on that one. Similarly with Wilfried Bony, we are waiting for information. We are waiting for news back from his club — we are still talking to them.”

Liverpool revive Ince interest

The Merseysiders have made their first move for the England Under-21 international since January as they step up plans to add another wide player to the squad

Liverpool have re-entered the race to sign Tom Ince as their pursuit of Christian Atsu stalls, Goal can reveal.

The Merseysiders have registered their interest in the England Under-21 international once again and will notify the player later this month as to whether they will follow up by activating his £8 million release clause.

As reported by Goal, Cardiff City have already bid £8m for the Blackpool attacking midfielder, while Swansea City are also closely monitoring his situation.

It is understood that Liverpool have been in contact with the player’s camp for the first time since January amid fears that a deal to capture Porto winger Christian Atsu could collapse.

The Ghana international, 21, has been on the Reds’ radar as they continue an extensive summer recruitment programme that has already included the signings of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, defender Kolo Toure, attacking midfielder Luis Alberto and striker Iago Aspas.

Manager Brendan Rodgers wants to add further width and penetration to his attack and has now targeted another swoop for Ince.

The Merseysiders came close to signing Ince in January but could not agree a fee with Blackpool during what were understood to be “heated” negotiations with the Championship club, which were complicated by the 35 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that took Ince from Anfield to the Seasiders in August 2011.

Cardiff made their first formal move for Ince, with the player’s father, Paul, the former England and Manchester United midfielder who is his manager at Bloomfield Road, admitting that Blackpool had accepted a bid from the Premier League newcomers.

However, Malky Mackay’s men have not yet agreed personal terms with the youngster, opening up the possibility that he could still move elsewhere, and Goal understands that Ince’s preferred destination would be a return to Anfield.

The Liverpool academy graduate has blossomed at Bloomfield Road, scoring 18 league goals for the Championship club last season.

Mkhitaryan should not leave Shakhtar – Lucescu

The Armenian midfielder is a reported target for Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund and his current manager believes that moving would be a mistake

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has urged midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan not to leave the club this summer.

The 24-year-old is one of Europe’s most sought midfielders, with Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund all reportedly interested in the Armenian international.

Last month Goal revealed Mkhitaryan has been identified by Brendan Rodgers as one of his top targets as he eyes a €49 million splurge in the summer transfer market.

But Lucescu is at a loss to explain why Mkhitaryan would want to leave the club which has helped him achieve continental recognition.

“I do not want to give comments. It’s his decision, his desire. I think he is making a big mistake,” Lucescu told Terrikon.

“Shakhtar are a strong club. And behind you is always 50,000 fans who will support you. We play as a team, which is each year fighting for the championship, for the cup and for the Champions League – he has to appreciate it. The whole team helped him to show up in the penalty area and score.

“He is very well thought of. There is still time. I would not want him to show the level that he showed before he played for Shakhtar. I just encourage him to return to the team and go to work. Nothing happened between him and the management, between him and the other players.

“We all helped him. Perhaps even more than all the rest. When he played in the championship, I had rarely changed, helping him to win the title of top scorer in the championship. And if he is in a club that surpasses [Shakhtar], I understand his wish.”

Shakhtar have already sold midfielder Fernandinho to Manchester City and forward Willian to Anzhi Makhachkala this transfer window.
