Bookmakers slash price on Luis Suarez moving to Arsenal to 2/1 after punters back the move

BetVictor have seen a significant amount of business backing the Liverpool striker to make a shock move to north London this summer and have cut the transfer to 2/1

It will come as no surprise that one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer looks set to be where Luis Suarez will be playing his football after the transfer window closes, but in a new twist the bookmakers have seen a number of bets for the Uruguay international to move to Arsenal.

BetVictor spokesman Charlie McCann said “Just before 7pm last night we were 20/1 (21.0) for the Liverpool striker to move to the Emirates before cutting him to 8/1 (9.0) after an initial flurry of small bets at that price.”

Despite the price drop for Suarez to swap Anfield for the Emirates Stadium Real Madrid remain the favourites in the market, priced at 4/5 (1.80) to be the next destination for the controversial Liverpool star.

Charlie McCann added “We would be staggered if the Uruguayan remained in the Premier League if he was to leave Liverpool but that 8/1 (9.0) was cut to 7/2 (4.50) then 3/1 (4.0) and now 2/1 (3.0) for Suarez to be an Arsenal player on 1st September 2013″.

Despite his disciplinary problems there is no doubt about the 26-year-old’s goal scoring talent. His 23 Premier League goals last season are proof enough of that, but a move to Arsenal seems somewhat implausible for a number of reasons.

Firstly, with Brendan Rodgers looking to establish his side as realistic top four contenders, it seems somewhat unlikely that Liverpool would be willing to offload their star striker to another Premier League club. Although the last time such a move happened the Reds will feel they were on the right side of the deal that took Fernando Torres to Chelsea for an eye-watering fee in 2011.

Secondly, with Arsenal supposedly close to sealing a deal to bring Gonzalo Higuain to north London from Real Madrid, the Spanish club will be in the market for another striker, unlike the Gunners who seem unlikely to bolster their resources with both players, despite Arsene Wenger being assured he has a sizeable transfer fund to work with this summer.

Suarez, who has been on international duty with Uruguay at the Confederations Cup in the last two weeks, has also spoken about his disappointment with how the media have treated him in England, a situation which seems unlikely to change should he swap Liverpool for the capital this summer.

Whatever the source of the money coming in for Suarez to switch his Premier League allegiances this summer, it still seems unlikely that the 26-year-old will be playing in the red of Arsenal next season and 2/1 (3.0) certainly doesn’t appeal.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich are both 12/1 (13.0) shots to sign Suarez before September 3rd 2013 with a range of clubs including Chelsea, Anzhi Makhachkala and Borussia Dortmund priced at 33/1 (34.0) with BetVictor.

Swansea complete £5m Shelvey signing

The 21-year-old, who earned an England debut last October, arrives at the Liberty Stadium with Europa League experience and becomes Michael Laudrup’s fifth summer signing

Swansea City have completed the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for £5 million, penning a four-year deal.

The 21-year-old spent three seasons at Anfield, making 69 appearances and scoring seven goals, with Roy Hodgson affording him an England debut in October, 2012, against San Marino.

The midfielder thanked Liverpool fans following the confirmation of his exit, adding that he owes the Anfield outfit for his progression over recent seasons.

Shelvey wrote on Twitter: “Just wanna say thank you to every one of the Liverpool fans for there support! They were first class. And will be truly missed..

“Will miss the city very much.. And the club! Owe a lot to everyone there! Thank you. Time to start a new chapter in life in Wales. Thank you.”

Ahead of Swansea’s debut Europa League campaign, the midfielder brings European experience having netted four goals in 10 outings for Liverpool last term.

Shelvey becomes Michael Laudrup’s fifth summer signing following the return of Jonathan de Guzman on loan from Villarreal and the permanent arrivals of Jordi Amat, Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo.

Liverpool boss Rodgers targets ‘attacking’ signing

The 40-year-old insists a creative player would benefit his side and also reveals that he is targeting a defensive acquisition this summer

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes the club need to sign an ‘attacking, creative player’ this summer.

The Merseyside outfit have activated the €22 million release clause of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but face strong competition from Borussia Dortmund for the Armenia international’s signature.

Rodgers, who guided Liverpool to a seventh-placed finish last season, has revealed that he is also targeting a new defensive signing.

“I still think another attacking, creative player, and depending on what goes out of the club – because naturally there might be one or two players who need to go out and play more – then we’ll need to fill those areas that have been vacated,” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

“Certainly another attacking player will really benefit us, and probably another defender. We’ll see how it develops over the course of the next few months.”

Liverpool have already completed moves for Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet and Rodgers believes his side’s fast start to the transfer window should make the initial stages of next season easier.

“It’s great – it’s a big thing to the club because we looked at last summer and there were lots of things that were difficult for us,” said Rodgers.

“That meant that the opening period of the season was difficult.

“From that we’ve got all our people involved, our recruitment team in – and they got to work as soon as they came in.

“We brought great signings in in January and that’s really helped us. Obviously the plan was to get our signings in as soon as we possibly could – and we still hope to make a few more.

“I’m very happy with the four players I’ve brought in, and they’ll add to the group.”
