Sturridge determined to get Liverpool ‘back where we belong’

The former Chelsea striker is adamant that, under manager manager Brendan Rodgers, the Reds should be challenging for silverware and will do his utmost to make it happen

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has spoke of his determination to get the Anfield club “back where we belong”.

Since finishing second in the Premier League back in 2008-09, the Reds have struggled to compete at the top of the table, placing no higher than sixth over the past four seasons and behind Merseyside rivals Everton in the last two campaigns.

Sturridge, however, is of the belief that the Reds should be competing for titles under manager Brendan Rodgers and has vowed to give his all to ensure the club are fighting for honours in the near future.

“It’s exciting to be a part of that philosophy and a new regime that the manager’s forming for us to move forward as a club,” he told the official club magazine.

“It’s the reason why the manager signed myself and Philippe [Coutinho] as well as the players he signed at the start of the season. The aim was to help the team get back to where it belongs.

“When you play in the Premier League everybody’s goal is to lift that trophy, to have the celebrations and to know that you’ve succeeded and been a champion over everybody else in the division.

“With the philosophy that the manager has, we should be challenging for honours. I think it’s going to be great for us in the future and we can move forward.

“We’ll all be doing everything in our power to make sure that Liverpool is a club that is challenging for Premier League titles because the fans have been waiting for that for a long time and hopefully next season we’ll be in the running.”

Sterling: I need to prove myself once again at Liverpool

The 18-year-old had a whirlwind season last year, featuring a full England cap and 30 senior appearances for the Reds, but feels that he has work to do after injury

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling believes that he has to prove himself to manager Brendan Rodgers once again this season following injury and the club’s new acquisitions.

The 18-year-old burst onto the Premier League scene last season and made more than 30 senior appearances, gaining one England cap in the process.

Despite his meteoric rise from the academy to the first team, however, Sterling is under no illusions over the size of the task to force his way back into Rodgers’s starting line-up.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done which I thought I should’ve done last season only for my injury,” the youngster told the Daily Mail. “I’m just looking forward to working hard in training and in games to try and show the manager what I can do to try and cement a place.

“Last season was a good start. The manager gave me the chance to go out on the pitch and show what I can do but then my injury started kicking in and my performances weren’t the best. It was obviously taking a toll on me so the manager took me out to protect me.

“It was also to get me ready for the new season. I’m not really thinking about [raised expectations]. As young lad I just have to go out there and play my game. People are going to be expecting things from me now but I’m not going to put pressure on myself.

“I’m just going to go out there and do my best for myself and the team.”

Sterling’s turn of pace and flamboyant trickery caught the eye last season but the England international knows that he needs to add more penetration to his game.

“It’s a work in progress but hopefully on the tour I can show the manager that I can be part of the team,” he continued. “The game in the Premier League is obviously fast-paced so I’ll be looking to use my pace but also out-think defenders.

“I’ve got to mix my game up as well which means not always dribbling and taking a few less touches. Everyone can see I like running with the ball so that could make it easy for defenders to read me. That’s why I need to mix it up.”

Ivanovic: I have no problem with Suarez

The Chelsea defender says he has no issues with the unsettled Liverpool striker and would have no problem playing alongside him if the Blues move for the Uruguayan

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic insists he has no problems with Luis Suarez and says he would not have an issue if the club signed the unsettled Liverpool striker.

The Uruguayan is currently serving a 10-match following an incident towards the end of last season in April when he bit the arm of Ivanovic.

Suarez, 26, is not thought to be Chelsea’s top target, but the wantaway Liverpool striker could emerge as a candidate should Manchester United not change their stance on Wayne Rooney.

“About Luis Suarez, I said straight after the game [in April], whatever happened on the field finished there,” the 29-year-old Serbia international told reporters at a pre-match press conference in Bangkok.

“He’s one of the best strikers in the Premier League. I don’t have any problem with him or doubt about that.”
