Rodgers confirms Reina to Napoli loan switch for ‘financial’ reasons

The Reds boss has admitted the club’s decision to offload the keeper because they cannot justify his €127,000-a-week wages following the €10 million arrival of Simon Mignolet

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that goalkeeper Pepe Reina is set to join Napoli on a season-long loan because of “financial” reasons.

Goal reported this week that the Serie A side had turned their attention to the Spain international after growing impatient at Julio Cesar’s reluctance to accept their contract offer.

And Rodgers has now confirmed that Reina will leave Liverpool this summer, as the club cannot justify his wages following the €10 million signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland in June.

“Financially it is something we needed to look at,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

“That would be the reason because obviously you wouldn’t move on a top goalkeeper.

“It reared its head over the last few months and I had to prepare for it by bringing in a new goalkeeper.

“Pepe is a good guy. I’ve a lot of time for him, and he understands what I want to do totally.

“He’s got a big season ahead because it’s a World Cup year and one where, if he wasn’t going to be playing, could severely harm his chances of going.”

Reina, who has three years remaining on his €128,000-a-week contract at Anfield, will be reunited with former Reds boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli.

The Spanish coach has already signed young goalkeeper Rafael from Santos for €5m earlier in July but wants a battle-hardened No.1 for the new campaign, and one who can also guide the 22-year-old Brazilian.

Rodgers stands firm as Suarez arrives for Liverpool crunch talks

The striker has arrived in Australia for the Reds’ pre-season tour and will meet with the manager for the first time since declaring his intentions to leave Anfield this summer

Brendan Rodgers has reiterated that Luis Suarez’s future lies with Liverpool as the striker arrived in Australia for the club’s pre-season tour.

The 26-year-old has declared his intention to leave Anfield on numerous occasions this summer but Rodgers has insisted that the Uruguay international will remain a Reds player for the foreseeable future.

Suarez will now link up with his team-mates in Melbourne, having been given extra time off after his participation in the Confederations Cup, and will speak with the former Swansea boss for the first time since he expressed his desire to leave.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him, he’s a player I’ve always supported,” Rodgers told reporters on Saturday after Liverpool beat an Indonesia XI 2-0 in Jakarta.

“I understand the situation but the bottom line is he is employed by the club.

“The money goes into his bank at the end of every month, so he should be here. If he’s not, which I doubt, there will be a problem.”

The Uruguayan striker refused to answer questions on his future when he landed on Sunday.

Goal reported this week that Arsenal will renew their interest in Suarez with a staggering bid worth £40 million, after Arsene Wenger’s initial £30m plus £5m add-ons bid was rejected out of hand by the Merseysiders a fortnight ago.

He scored 23 goals in the Premier League last season, second only to Manchester United’s Robin van Persie, and was included in the PFA Team of the Year.
