Molby ‘would love’ to see Ajax ace Eriksen move to Liverpool

The former Kop favourite believes the 21-year-old would be the perfect fit at Anfield following speculation linking the playmaker with a move to the Premier League

Liverpool legend Jan Molby says he “would love” to see Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen play for the Anfield club.

Eriksen has reportedly been subject to interest from the Reds, with manager Brendan Rodgers revealing he is keen sign similar players to that of January additions Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

And with the 21-year-old Dane falling nicely into the parameters set by Liverpool’s owners of buying younger, more versatile players, Molby believes the midfielder would be the perfect fit.

“I’d love to see him at Liverpool, and he is exactly the type of player Liverpool should be looking at, but there will be some serious competition I am sure,” Molby wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo.

“He’s a classy player. An old-fashioned No.10 in many ways. He has two great feet, he sees passes and has added goals to his game in recent weeks. He has all of the tools in his locker to be a real top class player.”

One advantage the Reds might have in their pursuit of the Ajax youngster includes their ability to offer more regular first-team football to that of other interested parties, something Molby feels could prove pivotal in negotiations.

“What I would say is that Christian needs to play regularly. Maybe that would count in Liverpool’s favour slightly, that they can offer him, you would think, regular first-team football,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the former Kop favourite insists that, although Ajax is a good place to develop as a youngster, Eriksen will have to move on from the Eredivisie side to further his career.

He added: “Eriksen, at 21, is at the stage now where he needs to take the next step. Ajax is a great club for developing young players, but you can’t stay there too long.”

No contact from Fiorentina for Liverpool striker Borini, insists agent

Reports from Italy had suggested the Viola were looking to end the striker’s second spell in England and take him back to Serie A, however Marco De Marchi says there’s no movement

Fabio Borini’s agent Marco De Marchi has rejected reports that the Liverpool forward is on the verge of a move to Fiorentina.

The 22-year-old only joined Anfield last summer but has had a frustrating first season after a series of niggling injuries has made it difficult for the Italian to break into the first-team, resulting in just five starts in the Premier League.

His lack of opportunities has led to reports in Italy suggesting the forward could move back to his homeland at the end of the campaign but his agent insists there has been no contact with Viola representatives.

“I’ve heard the Fiorentina rumours, but there has been no direct contact,” De Marchi told Tuttomercatoweb.

“Fiorentina are a club on the launch pad, they have laid the groundwork for an important project by signing great players and results will soon arrive.

“However, Borini has bought into the Liverpool project and they are one of the most important clubs in the world.

“He wants to be back by the end of the season to play in the European Under-21 Championship with Italy.”

Liverpool improvement is down to Rodgers, declares Johnson

The England full-back has heaped praise on the Anfield manager’s signings since taking charge and believes the former Swansea boss will turn the Reds into contenders once again

Glen Johnson has hailed his Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers as “very clever” for the way he has improved the club since taking charge.

The England international believes Rodgers’ decision to sign Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window has been a major factor in Liverpool’s rise up the Premier League table.

And with only seven matches left to play this season, Johnson expects the club to maintain their good form and build a platform for 2013/14 and be a “fighting force” once more.

“Brendan has been very clever with the signings he’s made and the squad is getting to where it needs to be,” Johnson told the club’s official site.

“We’ve won six out of seven games at Anfield so if we can finish the season with a record very similar to that then that would put us in good stead for the start of the campaign at Anfield for next season.

“We’re playing well at home, dominating games and picking up most points so the longer that continues the better.

“Then pick plenty more points up on the road and hopefully we’ll be a fighting force again.

“Nine times out of 10 we’re putting in good performances – we haven’t always picked up the points but more times than not we’ve played well.

“Next season, if we can play well and pick up the points, we’ll be a lot further up the table.”

The Reds host West Ham at Anfield on Sunday, with Johnson having started his career with the Hammers, and the 28-year-old is wary of the threat of his former club even though Liverpool loanee Andy Carroll is ineligible.

He added: “It’s always nice to play against your previous clubs – I always look forward to either going back there to play or for them to come to our ground.

“They’ve got plenty of good players. Andy poses an obvious threat but he won’t be there on Sunday. They’ve got Matty Taylor, who can shoot from distance. They’ve got a lot of good players.”
