Liverpool starlet Ibe looking to learn from Cristiano Ronaldo

The 17-year-old has impressed for the club’s youth teams this season but feels he needs to add more goals to his game, citing the Portuguese star as an example to follow

Liverpool youngster Jordan Ibe says he has been watching videos of Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in a bid to improve his goalscoring.

The 17-year-old winger moved to Anfield from Wycombe in December 2012 and has since gone on to earn his first senior call-up, making the bench for the club’s recent away trip to Southampton in March.

And, under the guidance of reserve team boss Alex Inglethorpe, the raw midfielder has confessed that he has been studying the Portuguese star’s natural game in an attempt to adjust his own accordingly in the hope of picking up a few new moves.

“Going forward, Alex Inglethorpe has helped me by showing me clips of Cristiano Ronaldo,” Ibe told the club’s official website.

“20 of Ronaldo’s goals last season were one-touch finishes at the back post. He’s been helping me to get within the frame of the goal and in the six-yard box.

“I haven’t scored a lot of goals this season, I have plenty of assists, but with what Alex is showing me I hope I can score a few more goals towards the end of the season.”

Lucas tips future success for Liverpool after penning new deal

The 25-year-old feels the club still has a long way to go before they can compete at the top level, but insists they are now on the right track under manager Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes the recent trend of key players signing new deals at the club points to a belief that the team can be successful again in the future.

With the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Raheem Sterling and Martin Kelly all committing to long-term renewals this season, Lucas extended his existing contract – which still had two years left to run on it – on Wednesday.

And the Brazilian feels that it all stems from an inherent belief that the club can once again become a major force to be reckoned with, with Lucas tipping them to challenge for silverware in the coming years.

“If I didn’t believe, I don’t think I would have signed a new deal,” Lucas told the club’s official website. “I think that’s why we’ve seen a lot of players signing new deals – because we really believe this club will be back where it should be.

“The last two or three years have had some difficult moments for the club but I think keeping these players and getting help from new players will be important for us, and we’ll work really hard to do whatever we can to put Liverpool back fighting for titles and in games the fans are really looking forward to.

“When I retire I would like to look back and see that my career at Liverpool has been a successful one. That means winning – and I still believe we can win important things here.

“Maybe it hasn’t been as quick as I or everybody would have wanted but I am sure in a few years’ time we will be celebrating some important titles.”

With the club currently sat in seventh place in the Premier League table and with little left to play for this term, Lucas admitted that manager Brendan Rodgers played a big part in him signing his new deal and that he is already excited about continuing to work under him.

He added: “Brendan played a big part in my new deal. I spoke with him a few times before we agreed the new contract. He has been a very good manager for all of us and we’re really looking forward to next season.

“We know how he works and how he wants us to play and everyone is looking forward to having a better season. I am really delighted to have the opportunity to play for this club.

“It’s where I think I belong and where I wanted to stay. It was an easy decision because after the long period of my career I have had here I think I would like to give the best of my time to this club.

“It was not a difficult decision to make and I am really looking forward to what will hopefully be a few more years with a lot of success.”

England squad ‘desperate’ to reach World Cup, says Gerrard

The Three Lions currently trail Montenegro in qualifying group H with just four matches remaining and the Liverpool captain admits he is worried about the possibility of failure

England captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that every player is “desperate” to reach the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

Roy Hodgson’s side sit two points behind Montenegro in qualifying group H and have just four games left to overcturn that deficit and ensure their place in the competition.

And the Liverpool midfielder has admitted that the idea of missing out on what could be his last World Cup is “daunting”.

He told reporters at the Soccerex Forum: “It’s daunting if you fear the challenge and start worrying and concern yourself with not qualifying; it is daunting, there’s no getting away from it.

“It is a huge year for the FA, the 150-year anniversary and what they’re doing for the game and putting back in.

“But in amongst that we’ve got a really big challenge ahead of us, and that’s to qualify for probably the biggest World Cup that there’s going to be.

“There’s no bigger place than Brazil to have a World Cup except England for us players, so we want to be there and we’re desperate to be there and we’ll keep fighting all the way to the end.”

The 32-year-old went on to reveal his disappointment at the media backlash which followed the 1-1 draw with Montenegro back in March.

“When we look back on the campaign,” he said. “Hopefully when we become group winners, we can look back and say this was a very good point.

“I was a bit surprised by the reaction to that game because it was built up as a very tough away game. The bit of stick we’ve had since that result surprised me a bit.

“It was slightly harsh because of the build up, all the questions I answered were ‘this team’s tough, they’ve got world-class players, the atmosphere is going to be intimidating…do you realise how tough this game is going to be?'”
