Sturridge reveals Chelsea anger: I wanted to prove a point against them

The 23-year-old admits he was disappointed not to start against his former side on Sunday, but believes his previous knowledge of the Blues aided his cameo performance

Daniel Sturridge has revealed that the anger he has for former club Chelsea improved his performance for Liverpool during Sunday’s 2-2 draw.

The 23-year-old moved to Anfield for a reported fee of £12 million after struggling for first-team opportunities with the Blues this term, and the weekend clash was the first time he has come up against his former side.

Sturridge came on at half-time with Liverpool trailing 1-0, and nearly assisted an equaliser for Steven Gerrard before hitting the post from 30 yards and scoring himself within seven minutes of his introduction – and he believes ill feeling towards his former employers aided his performance.

“I was disappointed not to start because the manager would have known I was a bit angry with Chelsea and wanted to prove a point against them,” Sturridge told the club’s official website.

“It was strange playing against them because I only left three months ago so I kind of knew their weaknesses and what their team was all about.

“I was itching to get on and the team performed well in the second half. We started attacking a lot more; in the first half we were a little bit defensive. The game opened up and we showed what we’re all about – it was good.”

Sturridge notched five goals in his opening six games for Liverpool but has struggled with niggling injury concerns of late, with his goal on Sunday his first since February – and the striker was relieved to end his two-month drought.

He added: “I’m happy but it’s my job. I’ll be happy today but tomorrow is a new day.

“I just look forward to the next one now, it’s onwards and upwards from here and I hope to continue to help the team get some results.”

Ajax defender Alderweireld plays down Liverpool speculation

The 24-year-old insists that there is “nothing true” about statements that the Reds will be his next club, and says that he could even stay in Amsterdam this summer

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has played down speculation linking him with Premier League side Liverpool, insisting there is no truth in the rumours.
The 24-year-old had previously stated that the Reds would “meet his criteria” if he were to leave the club this summer, but Alderweireld says that he could now stay in Amsterdam.

“I have also read that Liverpool would be interested,” Alderweireld told Metro.

“I never said Liverpool would be my next club. Nothing is true about that.”

Ajax are currently four points clear at the top of the Eredivisie table and are assured of European football next season, while Liverpool look set to miss out on a spot in the Europa League.

Alderweireld enjoys playing for the club, who shocked dethroned Premier League champions Manchester City in the Champions League earlier this year, and would be happy to remain with the club.

He added: “Ajax is in every way a fantastic club. We play for prizes every year and we also show good things on a regular basis in Europe.

“After the season, I will look at my options. Possibly, I even stay at Ajax.”

Liverpool striker Borini resumes full training

The 22-year-old has made 16 appearances in all competitions in a debut season at Anfield that has been disrupted by a broken foot and his most recent injury, a dislocated shoulder

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini has resumed full training with the club after recovering from a dislocated shoulder suffered against Swansea in February.
The 22-year-old has only made 16 appearances this season for the Reds after breaking his foot while on international duty with the Italy Under-21s in October, before his collision with Swans defender Kyle Bartley further hampered his debut season at Anfield.

The striker took to Twitter to reveal his good news, stating: “”Who i should be and who I feel to be” today first full training after injury!!! #be #firstraining #back #happy”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers made Borini his first signing at the club, with the former Swansea man joining from Roma for a fee of £10.5 million.

Borini has scored just one goal since joining the club, coming in his first appearance at Anfield in the Europa League game against FC Gomel.
