Kelly: I’m not worried about competition at Liverpool

The Reds’ defender is looking to bounce back from injury which has kept him out of action since September, and has revealed he is excited to compete for a starting place

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has vowed to fight for his place in the starting XI when he recovers fully from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee which has kept him out of action since September.

The 22-year-old made 20 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions last season, but has only featured seven times under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

With the right-back remaining on the sidelines, Andre Wisdom and Glen Johnson have both contesting the starting position – a tussle Kelly is relishing the opportunity of being involved in.

“It’s always good at any club to have competition for places,” he told Liverpool’s official website. “Whether you are looking to take someone’s place, or you are looking behind at someone who is pushing for yours, it’s always a great thing to have. It helps you progress as a player.

“At Liverpool, the competition is at its highest because it is a top club. But I can learn from everyone in the team, not just the defenders.”

He continued: “Once I’m fit, if I just keep working and stay injury free, my game can progress really well and I can be dangerous as a full-back and a centre-back.”

With Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season, Kelly could potentially fit into a new role as a centre-back. However, the young England international is aware that Carragher’s experience will be a huge loss to the club.

“He’s been fantastic for the club and for me personally as a player,” said Kelly. “Pretty much every time I have played he has been there alongside me. He has helped me through each game.

“I’ll be really sad when he goes because there is so much more there for me to learn from Jamie. I’m sure he’ll be around the club anyway, so he’ll always be able to offer that experience.

“But he is a great player, a great person and I’ll be very sad to see him retire.”

Mancini talks up Manchester City interest in Cavani, Falcao & Suarez

The 48-year-old spoke highly of all three of his reported transfer targets, while he also suggested that the likes of Samir Nasri and Joe Hart have underperformed this season

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has hinted that the Premier League champions will launch an overhaul of their squad in the summer by revealing his admiration for Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.

Goal.com revealed on Friday that Chelsea and Manchester City would go head-to-head in the pursuit of Falcao and Cavani this summer.

And Mancini has fuelled speculation linking City with the Uruguayan, as well as his fellow countryman Suarez, who Goal.com revealed was considering his Liverpool future in January, and Colombian Falcao.

“I like him, but all the world wants him [Cavani]. There are big players,” Mancini told the Guardian. “I don’t know what can happen. Suarez plays for a top team like Liverpool. Cavani plays for Napoli.

“Cavani and Falcao would work in England. They have experience. Both players are 26, 27. They are good enough to play in England.”

As also revealed by Goal.com, Neymar is another player on City’s wishlist. Mancini, however, fears the Premier League champions will miss out on the Brazilian as he may not be suited to English football.

“Neymar is a good player. He’s young. I don’t know if he’s ready to play in England because the football is totally different. I think he will go to Barcelona or Madrid where the football is more technical.

Mancini’s desire to overhaul his current squad stems from the notion that several of his stars have under-performed this season and he singled out goalkeeper Joe Hart as one of them, warning that he is not too big to be benched.

He explained: “Listen, I believed in Joe when nobody else did. I put him in the goal when everybody thought it was impossible that he could play ahead of Shay Given, who at that time was one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. I love Joe. If not, I wouldn’t have put him in the team two years ago.

“But it’s simple. If Joe continues to make mistakes, he goes on the bench. I’ve done it with Samir, [David] Silva and [Carlos] Tevez this season and it can happen with Joe.

“The problem is the goalkeeper makes a mistake, we have lost the game. Joe has the quality to be the best goalkeeper anywhere.

“He is the best goalkeeper in England but in the situation Manchester City are in, if you want to stay at the top, you need to work hard and think only about football. He needs to think only of his job and that is being a goalkeeper.”

The 48-year-old went on to praise City midfielder Samir Nasri’s talent but criticised the Frenchman for not displaying it on a regular basis, suggesting he has not been playing at his optimum level.

He continued: “I think Samir has fantastic qualities. With his quality, he should always play well. Every game he could be the difference. A player of this quality could be one of the best players in Europe. But it’s not happening.

“Sometimes a player thinks it’s enough what they did the year before and doesn’t understand that every day they should improve.

“If you are a top player you know you can improve until the last day of your career but sometimes you get players who think it is not important to work and this is their worst mistake. Samir can do better than this year. He is a top player but he has not been playing at his level.”

The Italian also spoke of his position within the hierarchy at the Etihad Stadium, specifically pointing out that Txiki Beguiristain and Ferran Soriano are “not above” him.

He said: “Txiki and Ferran? They are not above me. Above me there is only Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and Sheikh Mansour.”

“Ferran came from Barcelona and understands what it needs to be a top club. Txiki played football and knows football. They are good men.

“For this reason, I am optimistic about our future. We now have people who know their football. We need some players and they are working on it. At this moment it’s better our focus is on the last three months but the club knows this and I know this.”

Allen: Liverpool still have plenty to play for this season

The midfielder admitted Thursday night’s Europa League defeat to Zenit was “extremely disappointing” but is now eager to finish as high up the league as possible

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen says his side still have plenty to play for this season, despite their Europa League exit at the hands of Zenit St. Petersburg on Thursday night.

The Welshman scored the Reds’ second as they beat the Russians 3-1 at Anfield, but Hulk’s early strike ensured the visitors progressed on the away goals rule.

And, whilst Allen bemoaned the Merseyside outfit’s failure to progress, he underlined the importance of finishing as high up the league table as possible.

He told the club’s official website: “It was extremely disappointing. You score, win the second tie 3-1 and still don’t go through – it’s pretty hard to take.

“The score-line showed how much effort we put into the game and on another day we might have done enough to go through.

“The intensity of our performance, and the will and determination to try everything we could to get through, was evident.

“It’s hard to look at the positives at this moment but when we look back I’m sure we will.

“We approach every game between now and the end of the season to try and get as many points as we can and get ourselves as high a position in the table as we can.

“There might not be a trophy to play for but there’s plenty for us as a football club to play for and we’ll do that.”
