Comolli fears ‘victimisation’ could drive Suarez out of England

Former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli believes Luis Suarez could be driven out of the Premier League if he continues to be the subject of “victimisation” from the British public.

The Uruguayan forward, who joined Liverpool for €26 million in January 2011, has scored 40 goals in 80 appearances for the Reds but has been criticised after a series of controversial incidents – most recently his alleged handball against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup.

And Comolli believes it would be an “absolute shame” if Suarez was driven out of English football due to the treatment he has received from some quarters.

“It’ll be an absolute shame for English football if this victimisation drives him away,” Comolli told BBC Sport.

“As the biggest league in the world you want to keep the biggest players, not drive them away for crazy reasons.”

As well as the incident against Mansfield, the 25-year-old has been accused of diving and stamping, while he also received an eight-match ban last season for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

But Comolli, who played a major part in bringing Suarez to Anfield, says he is baffled by the striker’s treatment.

“I find it extremely hard to understand why people look at all the bad aspects and not how good the player is,” Comolli continued.

“He is a fantastic individual and professional – totally committed to his club, team-mates and job. He’ll give you everything, he’s a winner.

“People need to be very careful what they say and stop criticising him. He’s someone you’d want to go to war alongside.

“I don’t think you can captain Ajax as a foreigner at 21 years of age if you’re not a great individual.”

Facing Manchester United would ‘mean a lot’ for Liverpool youngster Wisdom

Andre Wisdom is ready to play a part in the biggest game of his Liverpool career when the Reds travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday.

With full-backs Jose Enrique and Martin Kelly both out injured, Glen Johnson looks set to carry on at left-back with Wisdom possibly filling in on the right side.

But should manager Brendan Rodgers pick him, the young defender is confident he will be able to handle the pressure of the game.

“It would mean a lot if the manager puts me in the side,” Wisdom told the Liverpool Echo. “This is a massive game but you have to prepare for every match the same.

“I’m not a nervous person. I just take things in my stride and try to keep my head down and get on with stuff. You can’t allow the pressure to get to you.

“United have some great players but so do we and our form has been good. We’ll go there with the right attitude and give it our all.

“We’ll have a strong team out and confidence is high. We know how much this game means to the fans. The support they give us is unbelievable and hopefully we can reward them with a good result.”

If the 19-year-old steps out at Old Trafford on Sunday, it would cap a memorable week for the defender who recently signed a new long-term contract at the club.

Money back on Sunday’s Premier League matches if they end in a draw

If either of these matches ends in a draw, Paddy Power will refund all losing First Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer, Correct Score & Scorecast singles on that game.

Two of the biggest games of the season take place on Sunday when Manchester United host Liverpool and Arsenal entertain Manchester City.

Paddy Power will refund losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast bets if the match they are placed on ends in a draw.

So let’s look at the likely goalscorers and correct scores these fixtures are likely to throw up.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have had the upper hand in the last two league meetings with their great northern rivals, beating Liverpool 2-1 home and away, while the Reds won their 2011/12 FA Cup tie 2-1.

United to repeat that score at Old Trafford is 7/1 (8.00) on Sunday, while Liverpool to win 2-1 is a 12/1 (13.0) chance with the same bookmaker.

It is a massive game in the fixture list and neither side will win without their big players performing.

At Anfield last September, Robin Van Persie kept his nerve to blast an 81st-minute penalty past Pepe Reina, to give United all three points after Steven Gerrard had scored for the sixth time against Liverpool’s fierce rivals.

Van Persie is chasing his 17th Barclays Premier League goal since his move from Arsenal in the summer and is 3/1 (4.0) to be the first goalscorer in the game, the same price to be the last goalscorer and 8/13 (1.62) to score at anytime over the 90 minutes.

Gerrard has been ever-present in the Reds’ Premier League campaign so far and is 10/1 (11.0) to be the first goalscorer, 10/1 (11.0) to be the last and 3/1 (4.0) to score at anytime.
While 15-goal Luiz Suarez is 6/1 (7.0) to open the scoring, 6/1 (7.0) to close the scoring and 6/4 (2.50) to score at anytime in the game.

It will be tight and tense but expect the big-game players to stand up and be counted in the Premier League’s biggest fixture on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manchester City go into their game with Arsenal having never beaten the Gunners away in the Premier League.

The reigning Premier League champions trail United by seven points in the league table and will know exactly what they have to do before they kick-off against the Gunners at 4pm.

These games have been just as tight over the past two seasons with two draws and a win each in their last four Premier League encounters.

With City’s Sergio Aguero most likely ruled out with a hamstring injury, the goal-scoring responsibilities will fall to Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko or Mario Balotelli.

Dzeko is Roberto Mancini’s leading Premier League scorer and is 11/2 (6.50) to get the game’s first goal, the same price to score last or 6/4 (2.50) to hit the net at anytime over the 90 minutes.

Arsenal have taken the lead in nine of their 20 league games and Theo Walcott’s hat-trick against Newcastle over Christmas saw him leapfrog Santi Cazorla as the club’s top scorer on eight goals.

The 23-year-old is 6/1 (7.0) to score the first goal of the game, the same price to score the last and 17/10 (2.70) to score anytime, as Arsenal look to make it five wins in their last seven home matches.

If either of these matches ends in a draw, Paddy Power will refund all losing First Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer, Correct Score & Scorecast singles on that game.
