Klopp: Sahin is an absolute quality player

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has expressed his delight at the arrival of midfielder Nuri Sahin, after he rejoined his former club on an 18-month loan deal from Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old left Westfalenstadion in 2011, but returns two years later after unsuccessful spells at the Santiago Bernabeu and with Liverpool.

“We will still have to get him used to our operations, which will take him several weeks,” he explained to Bild. “However, Nuri is an absolute quality player, and gives us a lot more options in midfield.

“Through his efforts, we can hope to integrate a great deal more attackers, such as Ilkay Gundogan.”

Gundogan echoed Klopp’s praise of his new team-mate and stressed how the additional competition for places could be a big positive for the club.

“He might increase competition within the midfield, but will also help us with his qualities and effort.”

Sahin pleased with experience of playing with Gerrard at Liverpool

On-loan Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin says that he has no regrets about his short spell at Liverpool.

The 24-year old joined the Merseyside outfit in the summer transfer window on loan from Real Madrid but failed to make a significant impact at the club, making just 12 appearances under Brendan Rodgers.

Sahin, however, claims that his time in the Premier League was worthwhile due to the experience he gained from playing alongside Steven Gerrard. He believes the England international has helped him improve his all-round midfield game.

“I have matured as a player after playing alongside the best players in my position,” Sahin told the club’s official website.

“Xabi Alonso when I was at Real Madrid, but especially Steven Gerrard at Liverpool – even though I didn’t get to play a lot with him.”

Sahin is on his second spell at the German club after coming through the youth team before departing to Spain in 2011.

He was a crucial member of the side which dethroned Bayern Munich to win Dortmund’s first Bundesliga title in almost a decade, becoming the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season in 2010/2011.

The loan deal will see the Sahin, still a Real Madrid player, stay with Jurgen Klopp’s side until the end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Sturridge signing is a gamble

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has taken a chance on Daniel Sturridge, ahead of Sunday’s clash between the two sides.

The 23-year-old has played for four different clubs in same number of years but wasn’t able to become a regular in Chelsea’s starting line-up over the past couple of seasons.

Sturridge, though, could feature alongside the in-form Luis Suarez at Old Trafford this weekend as Rodgers ponders how to set out his side against Manchester United.

Speaking ahead of the anticipated game at home against the Reds this weekend, Sir Alex wonders whether or not both strikers will start together.

“The big issue for Liverpool is whether they include new signing Daniel Sturridge,” he told United Review.

“Certainly the arrival of Sturridge gives Brendan Rodgers more strength and options up front.”

The 71-year old also praised the ambition of the England international as he made the switch after being denied first team chances Stamford Bridge.

“Sturridge has had a few clubs but I don’t blame him for jumping at the chance of joining Liverpool because he just wasn’t playing regularly with Chelsea and I always rate a player whose priority is wanting to play.

“Even so, his track record moving between a number of clubs suggests Brendan Rodgers is taking a bit of a gamble, but he clearly knows what he is doing.”
