QPR – Liverpool preview: Harry Redknapp looks for second league win as visitors aim for Europe

Harry Redknapp remains without long-term absentees Andy Johnson (knee) and Bobby Zamora (thigh) for the visit of the Merseysiders.

Jose Bosingwa (back), Julio Cesar (back) and club captain Park Ji-Sung (knee) are also doubts for Sunday’s clash.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have no new injury worries. Luis Saurez is expected to recover from a slight knock sustained against Stoke, leaving Fabio Borini (foot) and Martin Kelly (knee) as Brendan Rodgers’ only unavailable players.

  • At this point in the Premier League’s inaugural season in 1992-93, the Loftus Road side were seventh in the league with 32 points.
  • QPR currently have the fewest points at this stage of the season since Derby County in 2007.
  • Similarly, Liverpool‘s current points total of 25 is the lowest the club have ever had after 19 games since the three points for a win rule was introduced.
  • Luis Suarez (pictured, right) has scored 39% of his club’s league goals this campaign.
  • This term, Steven Gerrard has already played 141 per cent of the league minutes he managed throughout the entirety of last season.
  • The two sides last met in March this year in the memorable 3-2 win for QPR at Loftus Road, with the hosts coming from 2-0 down with only 13 minutes left on the clock.
  • Last season saw the two sides’ first meeting since 1996.

Liverpool boss Rodgers rules out January spending spree

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has ruled out an extravagant spending spree in January, but admits that he will be looking to bring in some extra attacking options once the window opens.

The Reds have struggled for options up front this season after missing out on transfer target Clint Dempsey in the summer before Fabio Borini’s foot injury left Luis Suarez as the only senior striker available at Anfield since October.

Moves for Daniel Sturridge and Thomas Ince have been mooted as possible solutions to their attacking dilemma, but Rodgers insists that he lacks the funds to vastly bolster the squad.

“We won’t be overly busy in January but some reinforcements will be nice, just the addition of some firepower to help us at the top end of the field,” he told reporters.

“There won’t be a great deal of business done, we are probably just trying to get some of the business done which we hoped to do in the summer.

“The budget was going to be tight this year, for a number of reasons, but we will be doing something because it is the need of the group.

“From next season the purse strings should loosen a bit more but, in terms of this season, it was always on the understanding it was going to be tight in terms of finance.”

Aside from financial constraints, Rodgers suggested that it is difficult to identify realistic targets mid-way through the season.

“We had hoped to do some business at the back end of August and we weren’t able to do that,” he said.

“The addition of a few faces in January can freshen up the group and allow us to kick on but it is all very well having absolute millions to spend if there is not the availability of players.

“It is not always about the finance and the affordability of the player, it is about the availability and, if it’s not the right availability, I won’t spend money just for the sake of it.

“Every manager would want to get them in as early as you possibly can and we have to give ourselves every chance.

“If we can get them in at the beginning, great, but, if there is something which pops up at the end of the window, we can look at it.”

Rodgers targets Liverpool consistency

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has called on his team to be more consistent in the future if they want to become a force to be reckoned with.

The Merseyside club have won two and lost two out of their last four league fixtures, which have included hammering Fulham 4-0 at home and an impressive 3-2 victory away at West Ham, but also a deeply disappointing 3-1 loss at Anfield to a struggling Aston Villa side before the Boxing Day defeat to Stoke.

Despite taking the lead early on against Tony Pulis’ in-form side, the visitors were outplayed for the most part before losing 3-1 and Rodgers remains frustrated at Liverpool’s slow rate of progress this term.

“I said during the week and last week that [consistency] will be the biggest thing for the group,” Rodgers told reporters.

“We were terrific at the weekend [against Fulham] but you have got to be able to put a run of games together  – if not you just keep taking two or three steps forward and making one or two back and then going again.

“That’s been the nature of the group over the last couple of years in terms of where we have finished. We’re looking to improve that. There is still an awful lot of work to do.

“You have to earn the right to play in whatever game – and in particular when you come to here. You know you are going to get pressed.

“I have no doubt about the characters we have – we have some big characters and big players, but tonight it was just too easy for them.”

Rodgers also revealed after the game that star striker Luis Suarez has been nursing an ankle injury of late, which was exacerbated by a collision with Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the second half. However, the 39-year-old boss has tipped him to recover in time for their next game against QPR on Sunday.

He added: “He’s been playing with a swollen ankle for the last few weeks. We’ll wait until the morning to see how he is but he is a warrior and he should be fine for the weekend.

“I think he was unfortunate to pick up a booking [in that challenge]. He’s not even looked at the ‘keeper – he’s trying to swivel on the ball. I thought it was a bit unfair he picked up a booking for that.”
