Agger signs new long-term Liverpool deal

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The Dane, who was signed by Rafael Benitez from Brondby in 2006, committed his future to the Reds on Friday morning.

The 27-year-old had reportedly attracted interest from Manchester City over the summer, though a move failed to materialise after the Premier League champions opted to sign Matija Nastasic.

After signing, Agger told the club’s official website: “It means everything to me. This is where I want to be and I’m happy the club want me. I am really happy right now. I’ve never wanted to go anywhere else.

“I feel I am a part of this club – and I want to be a part of this club in the future.

“I like the way it is going right now with the style we’re playing, and hopefully the results will come soon as well.

“The support from the fans has been unbelievable. The game when they were singing all the songs about me, it was difficult to focus on the game!

“It was such a good experience for me and I’d never experienced anything like it before. That is why I am so happy here. That for me is Liverpool Football Club.

“I feel I belong here and as long as the manager and the owners want me, I’ll be here.”

Reds managing director Ian Ayre also expressed delight that the Denmark international would be adding to his 177 appearances for the Merseyside club.

He said: “Daniel’s contribution since joining the club in 2006 has been absolutely fantastic and his loyalty to the team is recognised by the deal he has signed today.

“Daniel always made it clear he wanted to stay at Liverpool and we’re delighted that he’s committed his future to the club.

“We brought in some very exciting players this summer – some of whom chose Liverpool over clubs in the Champions League.

“But it’s equally important to retain your most important players and the fact that Daniel has now followed Luis Suarez, Martin Skrtel and Jonjo Shelvey in signing a new contract is testament to the fact that the players believe in what we’re trying to achieve here under Brendan Rodgers.”

Betting Special: Can Suarez, Ba or Jelavic continue their scoring streak this weekend?

The Premier League has been full of goals this season and many star strikers are already firing on all cylinders at this early stage. So far, there has been 171 goals in 59 games before this weekend.

Robin van Persie has five Premier League goals to his name as he looks to retain the golden boot, but he has got a fair bit of competition for the prize.

Luis Suarez banged in a hat-trick at Carrow Road last week – for the second season in a row – taking his tally up to five for the season.

Suarez looks sharp and his second goal against Norwich was very impressive. He also showed his ability from set pieces in Liverpool’s defeat to Udinese on Thursday. The Reds face Stoke on Sunday and Suarez is 7/2 (4.50) to open the scoring .

The striker has scored three times in his last three matches against Stoke and is a well-fancied 10/11 (1.91) to find the net at any time this weekend.

The 25-year-old is 8/1 (9.0) to be the Premier League’s top scorer come the end of the season.

Another man in fine form on Merseyside is Everton striker Nikica Jelavic. The Croatia international scored twice against Southampton last week as Everton won 3-1 and he is on a hot-streak in front of goal.

Jelavic has scored 12 goals in 18 league appearances for the Toffees and is 5/1 (6.0) to open the scoring on Saturday and 6/4 (2.5) to find the net at any time. With three goals already chalked up this season the striker is a whopping 20/1 (21.0) to be the top scorer this season.

Demba Ba scored twice last week too, as Newcastle drew 2-2 away to Reading. The Senegal international made it six goals in six games for the Magpies and looks to have rediscovered his scoring form for Alan Pardew’s side.

The 27-year-old scored in both fixtures against Manchester United last season and will be aiming to take advantage of their defensive worries on Sunday.

The in-form frontman is 13/2 (7.50) to open the scoring, which he did in the corresponding fixture last season. He is 2/1 (3.0) to find the back of the net any time and continue his incredible run of form. Paddy Power have priced him up at 14/1 (15.0) to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer this year.
