TEAM NEWS: Assaidi & Yesil handed League Cup starts for Liverpool against West Brom

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has selected a young side for the Reds’ Capital One Cup clash at the Hawthorns, as the Irishman seeks his first win in charge of the Merseysiders.

German under-21 striker Samed Yesil makes his first start after having made his bow in the Reds’ 4-1 win over Chelsea in the U21 development league, while defender Andre Wisdom returns after making his first-team debut against Young Boys last week.

Liverpool’s youngest ever player Jack Robinson starts, but that may change if England Under-17 international Jerome Sinclair steps off the bench, aged just 16 years and six days.

Steve Clarke, meanwhile, has named an experienced side for the visit of Liverpool, after the Baggies won 3-0 in this fixture on the Premier League season’s opening day.

West Brom (4-5-1): Foster; Jones, Tamas, Olsson, Ridgewell; Thorne, Mulumbu, Fortune, Dorrans, Rosenberg; Lukaku

Subs: Daniels, Dawson, Berahino, Long, McAuley, Yacob, El Ghanassy

Liverpool (4-3-3): Jones, Robinson, Coates, Carragher, Wisdom, Henderson, Sahin, Downing, Pacheco, Assaidi, Yesil

Subs: Gulacsi, Sama, Suso, Sterling, Wilson, Coady, Sinclair

West Brom striker Lukaku wary of Liverpool backlash

Romelu Lukaku has warned his West Brom team-mates to prepare for a Liverpool backlash as the two sides prepare to meet in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

It is just a month since Brendan Rodgers’ side were humbled 3-0 by The Baggies at the Hawthorns on the opening day of the Premier League season.

“To beat them in the league was a big achievement for us but we know Liverpool will want revenge,” Lukaku told The Independent.

“We have to be ready. It’s going well for us now and we just have to keep both our feet on the ground.

“If we want to keep our momentum going, we want to win this game and it would also mean we could go with a clear mind to the derby at Aston Villa [on Sunday].”

Competition for places up front is fierce at the Hawthorns and summer signing Markus Rosenberg is hoping to start against Liverpool and stake a claim for a permanent place in the starting XI.

“It would be great to start as I played 15 minutes on Saturday and hopefully I will get a chance to start against Liverpool,” Rosenberg told West Brom’s official website.

“I feel good in training but training is one thing and playing is another. I need more game time.”
