Kop idol Robbie Fowler has spoken of his admiration for Academy hot-shot Adam Morgan after he netted on his first senior showing during the tour of North America.
A strike against Toronto saw the young Scouser make the headlines and although he still has a long way to go, Toxteth’s finest has been impressed by what he has seen so far.
“I think it was massive for Adam to be involved with the first team on this tour and it was brilliant of the manager to give him that chance,” said Fowler.
“As a goalscorer I think he’s fantastic. I was lucky enough to train with him at the Academy last year when I was doing some coaching. He is very left footed and his finishing is very good.
“He is composed in front of goal and Rushie would tell you as well, if you are composed and patient in front of goal then you will have a chance.
“He never looks ruffled and that to me is a great sign regardless of what level you are playing at. He scored a goal against Toronto and that is a good sign.
“He’s a young lad, he’s got a lot to learn about his play outside the box but that will come. As a finisher he is probably one of the best I’ve seen for a long, long time to be honest.
“It’s wrong for me to say what he should be doing and so on because I’m not with him all the time but in the games I’ve seen him play in he’s done alright. He’s scored goals and he’s been a handful.
“He works hard and he knows his job which is to score goals. He has done that at every level he has played in so far.
“If you’ve got it you’ve got it. You can tell people how to score goals but it’s about being instinctive, composed and patient because it could be 89 minutes before you get a chance.”
Fowler was also impressed by Raheem Sterling and is looking forward to seeing more from him in a red shirt in the years to come.
He added: “He’s very, very quick and is a handful. He’s a young lad who will learn and be a better player for getting those minutes in the Premier League last season.
“With the pace he’s got he’s always going to cause problems and he’s certainly a good player.
“There were a lot of young kids on the tour and it was brilliant. Fair play to Brendan for involving the young kids because when you step up to the first-team squad you are training with better players and playing with better players.
“Hopefully the Academy players can become regular first-team players in the future because of this experience.”
Having come through the youth ranks himself Fowler also explained the main differences the young players will have faced training with senior players like Steven Gerrard.
He said: “When you are a young lad and you are playing with the senior players they don’t give you a minute’s peace so it teaches you that when you’ve got the ball you’ve got to get your head up quick and make quick decisions.
“This is how the players will get better playing alongside more experienced players. They are also playing against better players who will make them work that little bit quicker when they have got the ball.
“You have got to learn very quickly and you have seen that over the years with the youngsters who have come into the first team and adapted quicker than most. There are a lot of great kids out there but the question is, can they can adapt from playing at reserve team and Academy level to playing with the first team? The step-up is absolutely massive.
“The speed of movement is different as is the overall movement of the players and it’s just a massive, massive difference and you do need to adjust really quickly.”
The legendary striker also spoke about the early impact Rodgers has had at Anfield and firmly believes he is the right man to lead Liverpool forward.
“I’ve gone on record as saying it’s refreshing with the way Brendan has come into the club and gone about his job.
“His work at Swansea last season was fantastic. He is doing everything right and is saying everything right and it’s now up to the players to implement his work on the training ground and take it onto the pitch.
“He has certainly started off well and impressed a lot of people including myself.”
