Rodgers salutes Suarez

Suarez agreed a new long-term deal with the Reds on Tuesday, quashing reports that he could be on his way out of Anfield this summer.

His decision to commit his future to the club has been welcomed by all of those inside the camp, and the Kop faithful.

Rodgers is thrilled to have secured the services of a man set to play a key role in his new Reds regime and is confident Suarez will set the Premier League alight in 2012/13.

“I’m delighted that he has signed,” he told the club’s official website.

Journey

“I think he’s one of the best strikers in world football. Hopefully, he was able to see our vision going forward, in terms of what we’re trying to do.

“I think he felt safe and secure at the fact that we look like we are heading in the right direction and he’s very happy to come with me on that journey – which I’m delighted about.

“He’s committed himself long-term to the club and he’s really looking forward to playing in this way of working. As a manager and for the supporters, I’m delighted because I know how important he is to them.

Brendan Rodgers Quotes of the week

“He’s a winner. He wants to win. This is a guy who, whether it’s raining or there’s sunshine or snow or hail, he’s out on the field.

“You very rarely see him in a treatment room. He loves his football and football is his life. It’s his passion and I can relate to people like that; people who want to succeed and people who are passionate about success.”

Excitement

Rodgers believes Suarez will slip seamlessly into his Liverpool side, with his South American flair ideally suited to the entertaining brand of football he is looking to produce.

He added: “He’s a player who works well across the line. He’s clever in his movement and he always asks questions of defenders.

“He’s either on the shoulder (of the back four) or he’s in between the lines. When he’s around the edge of the box, there’s always that sense of excitement that something might happen.

“As a manager, I love that invention and imagination at the top end of the field and Luis certainly gives that. He will fit into the dynamics of the team.

“He’s got a great mentality. Alongside that are his footballing qualities; his movement, his cleverness, his brightness and his all-action game is fantastic. Not just his talent, but his ability to work hard, was very important to the team last season and hopefully that can continue.”

Rodgers’ reign excites Suarez

News of the striker’s decision to pen fresh terms has come as welcome relief to all of those at Anfield, following speculation regarding the 25-year-old’s future.

Suarez insists that leaving was never in his thoughts and claims he cannot wait to start the new season under a coach who has forged a reputation for playing the game the right way.

On Rodgers, he told Liverpool’s official website: “He is a good person. I spoke with him last week and he spoke fantastic to me.

Impressed

“We know what he wants – he wants us to play with the ball all of the time and it’s very important. We try our best in training and we hope to do so in the matches, also.

“He wants us to play with the ball all of the time. He tells us he wants 70-minute or 90-minute concentration all of the time in training. This is very important.

“I am enjoying training and happy with it. It’s important for players to play with the ball all of the time – and with the manager that’s what we’re trying.

“I think he is a good manager and I was impressed with the work he did with Swansea last season. We played them twice and they tried to take the ball from us in good positions with lots of pressure.

“I think Brendan will try the same with Liverpool and we will all try to do our best.”

Fit

Suarez only arrived back at the Reds’ Melwood training base on Monday, following his involvement at the 2012 Olympic Games, but claims he is ready to be thrust straight back into action and is hoping the 2012/13 campaign will prove to be a productive one on a collective and personal level.

“I’m happy to be back,” he said.

“Training is going fine. It had been a long time since I’d last seen the boys and the people who work at Melwood, so it’s been great to do that in the last few days. I am happy because I have come back and I am training for the start of the next match.

“I am fit and I can play (on Thursday against Gomel in the Europa League), but it’s not my decision – you’ll have to ask the manager!”

He added: “I know I am a striker and my job is to score, and I try to do this all the time and give my best on the pitch, but I also hope to help the team score goals because when Liverpool win, that is very important for me.”

Suarez signs Reds extension

Sky Sports revealed earlier on Tuesday that the Uruguay international was poised to agree fresh terms with the Reds.

An agreement has now been thrashed out, just 24 hours after Suarez re-joined the Reds fold following his involvement at the 2012 Olympics.

New Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has convinced the 25-year-old that he is in the perfect place for his career, bringing to an end any uncertainty regarding his future.

Suarez insists he was more than happy to put pen to paper just 18 months after arriving in England on a five-and-a-half-year deal from Ajax.

“To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city,” he told the Reds’ official website.

“That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract.

Luis Suarez Quotes of the week

“When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan.

“I am happy off the pitch because the people of Liverpool are good with me and my family. I try my best on the pitch and when you are happy off the pitch, you are happy on the pitch.

“I want to say thank-you to the fans because they are our 12th player. The supporters of Liverpool are unbelievable.

“Five or six years ago I watched on TV the stadium and the club, and now I play here and the supporters have helped me. That’s very important for me.”

Rodgers added: “I’m delighted. When you have the opportunity to work with world-class players it’s fantastic.

“There were certainly a few clubs who were interested in him but over the off-season he and I communicated well – and he’s committed himself for the long term here now.

“He’s really looking forward to playing in this way of working. As a manager and for the supporters, I’m delighted because I know how important he is for them.”
