Liverpool – Wigan 2:1

Fernando Torres of Liverpool is congratulated by team mate Steven Gerrard (R) after scoring his team's second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and Wigan Athletic at Anfield on December 16, 2009 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool recorded only their third win in 10 league games as celebrations of 50 years since Bill Shankly became manager were marked by narrowly defeating Wigan 2-1 at Anfield.

David Ngog and Fernando Torres scored the goals for the Reds, the former after only nine minutes.

But instead of instilling confidence it was Wigan who looked dangerous against a nervy Liverpool side.

Substitute Torres proved the Kop’s hero again with a late second and Charles N’Zogbia netted in injury time to give the Latics a goal they deserved.

Rafa Benitez has issued a personal guarantee to Reds supporters that Liverpool will finish in the top four, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Spaniard is adamant they will start picking up points now that stars like Fernando Torres are back playing.

“Every game for us is a game we have to win,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Wigan at Anfield.

“Our mentality is to win every game. Sometimes you and sometimes you can’t.

“But you can’t be negative. You have to be positive and I am really positive.

“How can I change things? By working hard every day. The players are the same as me and they are working hard every day in training.

“I can guarantee we will finish in the top four.

If you make mistakes, you have to keep going. We still have 22 games to play. We know we have to change our target and now it’s about getting three points against Wigan. If we do that, then we move on to Portsmouth.

When you are in a bad moment, you have to keep working and concentrating on your job. I’m really pleased to be at Liverpool and I will try to stay for a long, long time.”

Rafa Benitez: Liverpool’s target is still the top four

Liverpool Manager Rafael Benitez shakes hands with Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger (R) at the end of the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield on December 13, 2009 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez believes his side’s confidence disappeared after Arsenal’s second goal – but he pledged to keep going.

He said: “The own goal changed everything, the confidence changed and we started to make mistakes.

The first half was really good and we were very pleased.

The second changed and they were playing with more confidence and we played with less.

We conceded too early and the second goal came too soon after.

We will keep going. We have another important game on Wednesday, we have some players coming back.

Top four is the same target, it’s a long way but we need to keep going.”
