Suarez escapes Fifa punishment after appearing to punch Chile player

The much-maligned Uruguay international appeared to strike La Roja’s Gonzalo Jara in the face during his side’s World Cup qualifier in March, but has avoided reprimand

The Uruguayan FA (AUF) has announced that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez will not face punishment after appearing to punch Chile defender Gonzalo Jara during Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against La Roja on March 26.
The incident was not spotted by officials but was retrospectively analysed, but Fernando Cacares, AUF’s general secretary, has revealed that the President of Fifa’s Disciplinary Commission has decided against reprimanding the 26-year-old.

“The president of the Disciplinary Commission of FIFA has decided that this matter does not require the intervention of the Disciplinary Commission of FIFA and therefore, this procedure is now closed”, the statement read.

“We beg you to extend this communication to the player Luis Suarez as soon as possible and we thank you for your invaluable collaboration”.

The announcement will be a welcome relief for Suarez, who is currently serving a lengthy 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic when the two sides faced each other in late April.

Agger to miss final two Liverpool games after back treatment

The Denmark international defender admitted on Tuesday that his injuries had made him consider retirement but the Reds are taking “proactive” measures to keep him fit

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is set to miss the remaining two games of the season as he undergoes “proactive” treatment to strengthen his back, the club have announced.

The Denmark international has made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season, scoring four goals in the process.

However, he will be unavailable to manager Brendan Rodgers for the fixtures against Fulham and QPR, joining captain Steven Gerrard on the sidelines.

Agger has long struggled with a succession of knee and back troubles, undergoing surgery on a recurring spinal injury in 2009 and admitting on Tuesday that he had considered retirement.

The centre-back’s latest treatment involves a stint of rehabilitation that could preclude him from pre-season training, although the club are yet to confirm the likely duration of his recovery.

‘I have considered retiring’ – Liverpool defender Agger almost called time on his career

The Danish centre-back has spent long spells on the sidelines in the past but has been a major part of the Reds line-up this season having fought his way back to fitness

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has admitted he considered retiring from football after suffering an injury-plagued few years at Anfield.
The 28-year-old has struggled to nail down a regular place in the Reds side thanks to a succession of knee and back problems that have blighted his career.

This season, however, the Denmark international has made 39 appearances and has become a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side, but Agger admitted he has thought about calling time on his career more than once.

“I do not have a long time left [in my career],” he told Danish newspaper BT.

“I have considered ending my career some times. I have had some serious injuries, and at times I have considered retiring. But right now I am fine.”

Agger has made 208 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool since moving to Anfield in 2006 and has found consistency lately alongside Jamie Carragher, though the Reds will need to find a new centre-back to partner the Dane when the 35-year-old retires at the end of the year.

Liverpool currently lie in seventh place in the Premier League table, five points behind local rivals Everton, and travel to Fulham on Saturday knowing their hopes of playing European football next season are pretty much over.
